I walk down to the bar down the street (when I have an evening to get away) and have a few drinks a few times a month. I always bring a book and sit down and read though. I don't want to socialize, but it's nice to be around people. I get the strangest looks from people. Does anyone else do this? Do you think it's an odd thing to do?

A coffee house is too beatnik for me. I live in a little hick town anyways, there's none of those around here!

I will check out Colbert's book- thanks for bringing it up! I was wondering if it was good!

Cafes and coffee shops are usually the place to do reading, rather than bars. But hey, I assume you are not writing this message from downtown Burma and so live in a free country where you can do such crazy wacky odd ball things.

But I think you need some ying to your yang, and take a bottle of bourbon to your local library.

In my state a bar isn't required to close in any respect. inspite of the undeniable fact that, the sale of alcohol from any source is illegitimate between the hours of two am and six am so what element might there be in staying open. i'm confident the regulation exists because of the fact some "do sturdy" state rep desperate that it would decrease down on crime.

This is what I miss about living in Europe!!! I used to bring my book to the pub, have a few drinks, enjoy being around other people instead of huddled in my apartment and no one bothered me or thought anything of it (even though I am female). In the US, if I try the same thing men will constantly harass me or everyone will think I'm wierd.

Do what makes YOU happy and screw what anyone else might think.

Well I have had some dates more boring than a "bad" book ...

A good book ... a few drinks ... , a bar is the perfect spot ... set yourself right in the scene ... at least a bar has flavor and the entertainment can be pretty good too ! You GO Girl!!!

So whats the book? hehehehehehe Get my copy and check out the local places ...sounds good night to me ! Thanks for the idea : )

I've done it before when I didn't feel like talking to anybody but wanted a drink so you're not alone.

I think it's more to do with going to a bar is a social activity for most people and bringing a book is not being social.

So go ahead, bring your book and tip your bartender.

It looks strange if you're sitting at the bar but if you're in a chair of sofa I think it looks normal. Some people might thing you want to draw attention to yourself but hey, **** them

Edit: Captain is right that book is really good.

Yea, it's odd, but it shouldn't be... What's the difference if you sit in a coffee shop or a bookstore or an airport or a BAR??? But I would typically think it's odd if I saw that.

It's a little odd, but i do it too - people are far more interesting to watch when they're drinking alcohol compared to when they are having coffee :)
