Someone smiles and says hello as they walk by, what's you're normal reaction?

How do you feel, what's usually or most likely your reaction when just a random stranger walks by with a smile on their face, says hello?

It doesn't mean anything more than that.

I was raised to keep a smile on your face and if eyes meant then offer a hello as your walking by.
It's polite to acknowledge the people around you.. and if someone greets you like that, you should do the same back.

I have made a vow to never again live in a city where if you smile and say hello to strangers on the street, they just look away.

The best places I have lived in, if you smile at people they smile back. In Manila in the Philippines, people sit on the jeepneys (local buses based on WWII US army jeeps) and talk to strangers about life (do people do that in New York). In some countries I sit in a park or other place and people just come up and say hi. Other cities people star and if you look at them they look away.

So, my reaction is "because I am shy" just smile back

As a courtesy, I certainly will say hi back and smile.

I don't go out late at night so I don't have to worry about who says hi to me. Whether it's a man, woman , or a child, I don't think about it.
