I live in Michigan and they start at $1,000 here. If you get them at the pet store, they'll cost just as much, if not more. I would never buy a dog from a pet store, though. I worry about them coming from puppy mills.

First, PetsMart and Petco are reputable pet stores and don't sell dogs or cats. PLEASE don't buy a puppy from a pet store. You will pay several hundred dollars more for a puppy that is most likely from a Puppy Mill.
Buy a puppy from a reputable breeder who shows Pugs, and you will get a healthier, better socialized puppy. Also please consider a Rescue Pug. A slightly used Pug will cost much less, be house broken, and give you many years of joy.
Check the links below for breeders and Rescue near you.

When you get puppies from a pet store, the chances of them being bought from a puppy mill are very high. We want to stop the buying puppies from puppy mills so if you want a puppy, go to a breeder or even better research on line for pugs or other dog in local humane societies. They really need a good home. Go an visit the dogs there and pick the one you like the most!

Yes definitely they are expensive from the pet stores and you don't usually get what you pay for. The pet stores usually buy these puppies from puppy mills and backyard breeders so low quality and more of a risk to health problems and more than likely your puppy will be coming home with kennel cough, when they are in pet stores because of the high exposure to other dogs. If you want A WELL BRED PUG for a cheaper price and more than likely a better quality call your local humane society for reputable breeders in your area.

Pugs aren't really any more expensive then any other dog, and DO NOT buy any dogs from pet stores. Stores get those kind of animals from puppy mills, who are treated very badly and that's how they make money. Find your local shelter, request a pug as a breed of dog and most likely they will let you know when one comes in that is available for adoption.

Petsmart and Petco are not stores that sell dogs...just dog supplies (as well as small animals such as hamsters, mice, guinea pigs, fish...ect) Pet stores that sell puppies should be avoided. Either adopt a pug from a pug rescue or shelter or buy from a reputable pug breeder. Here's a link that could give you a direction and information. Good luck.

In Canada the usual price for Pugs is $800.00 for a pet quality pug. Better ones that have all their health testing done go for WAY more than that because the reputable breeders have spent loads at the vet making sure their animals are o.k. Pugs are a breed that you have to research because they can have a lot of problems. Check all Pug club websites for more details.

Petco and Petsmart do NOT sell puppies/dogs. Petsmart does help with pet adoption from area humane societies, and will have pets [usually cats] that are available in their stores.
But... yes, a pug is expensive to buy and maintain as a healthy dog.

Pugs are expensive whether you buy them from a store or a breeder. If you are going to fork out that much money, make sure you really want it.
You could also try rescuing/adopting one from a shelter, as should cost less, and will probalby be a little older than a puppy.

It depends! You can get a great Pug from a local shelter or Pug rescue, and the cost there is essentially free. You can get a great Pug from a professional breeder for $500-$1500 or so, depending on where you live and the quality of the dog.
In any case, I can't recommend Pugs enough -- they're loyal, affectionate, cute, unique and lovely dogs! When you get one and need inspiration for picking out the perfect name, check out http://pugdognames.blogspot.com/

Yes,
they are expensive. I wouldn't recommend getting one from a Pet Store though. You may pay a little more from a breeder, but get one from a breeder. Then you'll probably be able to see the parents and their temperament, the environment they grew up in, the personality of the people who raised them, etc.
You'll also be able to get advice on the dog from a professional. When I went to buy a pet, I asked some questions from someone who worked at Pet Smart and I was astounded by their ignorance. Many of the people that work at pet stores are young kids making an extra buck who don't really know anything about most of the pets there.
Good luck!
