They are very comical dogs. Everyone that I've ever asked has horror stories about the mischief an unattended beagle can get up to. This usually involves food. Like the time my sister in laws beagle decided to redecorate the birthday cake that had been left on the kitchen counter. You couldn't tell anything was wrong from the front, she'd licked all the icing off the back though!

They are great dogs for the right person.
They are strong willed, stubborn and loud. They really need a firm, experienced hand to be a good dog. With out proper and diligent training they are loud, obnoxious little things.
If you get a beagle I strongly suggest you look in to obedience classes, and not just puppy classes, look in to researching training techniques, and consider your lifestyle? Can you (or your neighbors) handle a mercilessly loud dog? Does your lifestyle allow for a very energetic dog (that is you need to be able to take it for long walks most days of the weeks, and preferably have an area and time where you can play fetch or ball every day) ?

We have a beagle- he is a good dog. They tend to have very loud barks, and you will have to watch his diet carefully- they will eat whatever they can get their hands on. They also like to dig, so be ready to deal with that.
Other than that, he's a lot of fun and very loving. Good luck!
Edit: Our dog doesn't shed a lot, compared to other dogs I've had. We had a Golden and her hair was absolutely everywhere. Not sure what the other posters are comparing to, but I don't think our dog sheds a ton.

No. They may beg for food after they've eaten 20 lbs of it; they're nearly independant, go ARROOOOO instead of bark, are choosy about what they want to do for the day, and don't always come when called, especially when outside. They could make great airport metal detecting dogs, though.

Beagles are scent hounds and will follow their noses-even though they are loyal. As long as you understand this and do not expect a dog who will sit in your lap at all times and be quiet, you should be ok.

I don't know about personality in general, but if you are thinking about it, do consider your tolerance for noise. Our neighbor two houses down got one a few years ago. When the dog is outside it does nothing but SCREAM. I have heard it actually bark only one time. The rest has all been a harsh howl/scream, every damn day...almost the entire time it is outside...

Beagles are the best. Timid and polite, good hunters, loyal and really cute. Be sure you give them plenty of good food and fresh water every day!

They are wonderful dogs as long as you know EXactly what you are getting in for....are you prepared for a hunting dog?
A scent hound that can Never be let off lead? are you prepared for a dog that will follow it's nose and never listen to you as it's found something to hunt? possibly, probably get run over if it gets off lead, loose out thru a door, sees a squirrel outside and goes thru a window to get it? doesn't sound like you are a prepared hound owner, count dachshunds out too !

Like others have said...they do shed despite the short hair and they need exercise. I have a couple friends who own them and they love the breed....so, I would say, yes, they are a good dog.
