my fiancee just bought me an engagement ring with a heart shaped diamond and we were just trying to figure out which way the heart should face....outwards to show my love for him to everyone else...or inwards to point to my own heart.

You know, I don't think it matters. Just be aware that the point of the heart might dig into your skin a little bit over time if it's pointing toward you. I have a ring that is triangle shaped and the point started to rub my skin raw, so I had to turn it around. Depending on the setting, you might not have this problem.
Personally I would think it's better to have the heart facing you, but I think it's all in personal opinion.

I'd think you'd treat it like a Claddagh ring (the ring with the heart being held by the hands).... which according to Wiki:
The way that a Claddagh ring is worn on the hand is usually intended to convey the wearer's romantic availability, or lack thereof. Traditionally, if the ring is on the right hand with the heart facing outward and away from the body, this indicates that the person wearing the ring is not in any serious relationship, and may in fact be single and looking for a relationship: "their heart is open." When worn on the right hand but with the heart facing inward toward the body, this indicates the person wearing the ring is in a relationship, or that "someone has captured their heart". A Claddagh worn on the left hand ring finger, facing outward away from the body, generally indicates that the wearer is engaged. When the ring is on the left hand ring finger and facing inward toward the body, it generally means that the person wearing the ring is married.

There is no significance with white and yellow gold except that gold is a precious metal. The heart should face the way you want it to. I've had a ring that has a purple stone shaped like a heart and it faces me. I just prefer it that way. And I hate to break it to you, but after the initial excitement, people aren't going to care that your heart faces them to see the love you have for your fiance. No one will walk up to you and say "I see your ring faces me and that you're showing the love you have for your fiance."

I wear mine pointed outward (the bottom of the heart facing my nails). This worked best for me because when people want to see it they don't look at an upside ring. I chose white gold simply because I felt the color went better with the diamond.

I'd say wear it so that when you look at it you see the heart right side up. If I bought my fiance a heart shaped diamond - I'd want them to see the heart the right way whenever they looked at it, so they would know how much I love them...

I'd wear it with the pointed end facing me, I guess there is no right or wrong way to wear it, but that would make more sense to me. Try it on both ways and see which way looks best on your finger.

I just learned this recently. The heart cleavage should be facing you. That way when people look at your hand they will see the perfect heart shape not an upside down one.
I always thought it should face out since I will be the one staring at it the most.

good question and I still don't know. someone told me that if I can't see the heart, that is a signal to others that there's trouble in paradise. I wear it however it goes on in the morning.

The heart faces you when you look at it.
Yellow gold is classic; white gold is a fad.

I would wear it so the point is pointing toward you. That just feels most natural to me :)
