I wish I could tell you more about the reserves but I was active and deployed quite regularly and never saw any reservist during deployment. I know times have changed since I was in 88-94 but you are going in a highly demanded rate so I would expect a deployment within the first year. Again this is speculative as I never saw a reservist outside of training. You picked quite a combo there Medical Corpsman and Damage Control. It sounds like you are looking for some experience and a jump for a fire department. I wish you the best of luck, the Navy can be a great place to find what you’re looking for but please realize it is a job and it is not like the movies.

DCs are NOT EMTs. they get no EMT training at all. their duties are also much wider in scope than a civilian firefighter. In fact if you want to be a FF , you want the AF Reserves, as they are the only ones who do not use civilians on their bases.
If you have ever seen Down Periscope, that scene in the engine room when Stepanik is wresting with a metal cuff and clamps it around a burst pipe.. THAT'S what DCs do, as well as run all the fire retardant/protection gear on board.
How often you deploy and in what capacity( you may not be doing DC work when you deploy, for instance) depends on your Unit and manning power, and whether or not you get loaned to somebody else's unit. You can expect at least once in addition to your one w/e a month and 2 weeks a year training schedule. It may be 4 months long, it could be 15 months long.
Msg For Tiffany above: FCs do NOT put out fires, they START them. They maintain , repair and operate the launch control systems of the weapons platforms.

Well, for starts, you would go to Great Lakes, IL for Bootcamp, then they would probably keep you there if you are looking for a medical position for A-School, if you went Fire Control...who knows...depends on what it is on. Right now, if you go reserves you have a really good chance of being deployed. They are activating most reservist to active duty in the area that we are in. Good Luck, hope this helped.

youll need to go to bootcamp, then if you want to get into fire, you would go to a-school. my hubby is DC. he hasnt seen too much fire, but on a bigger ship it is more likely. he is not reserve, so i dont know all the details that go into that. i do know that my hubby has a good command and sends him off to fire related schools all the time. being DC on a small ship puts you into the entire engineering dept, you get your hands on everything. sorry if im not much help, but based off of our experience, this is what i know.
msg for mrsjvb: lighten up ok!
