There are a lot of carriers who have done that. Allegeny Airlines, Midwest Air are two that come to mind.

By no frills I assume you also mean LCC. Understand that the tow are uniquely different in their business operations, but most of the times a "no-frills" airline is an LCC, but not all LCCs are no-frills.

Umm, to answer your question - here in the U.S. we can consider Independence Air which attempted to operate CRJs in an LCC venture, but were unsuccessfull. They did not attempt to go "full-service" but decided to use larger aircraft which failed in the end. Also, in the U.S. we had Midway which failed a few years ago. Also, Delta experimented with Song, and in many ways Song did not fail as a carrier in that the planes were integrated back to the Delta fleet and then the services from Song adopted to mainline Delta services.

Independent airlines( iFly), very good service in east coast and once expanded to west coast and forced united, usairways to cut fare and increase flights, finally they lost a lot of money and went bankrupt in 2 years.
