I attended a job fair where the unit director (a large hospital) asked me to apply and allow her to look over my application. It wasn't actually an interview, we just got to talking at the job fair and she said she would be interested in having me. I have applied but have not heard back from her. It has been 4 days. Is it okay to call her? How long should I wait, and what should I say? I've never had to follow up with any job in the past, and this is new to me. Thank you all in advance.

It is not inappropriate to make a call... but what is most appropriate per interviewing etiquette is to send a follow-up letter. In the letter express how much you enjoyed speaking with the unit director, also mention your interest in the position you discussed and that you would like to schedule a personal interview where you can discuss how you can contribute to their organization. State in the letter that you will be calling to follow up. Then include another copy of your resume, in case yours has been placed in the pile of other resmes. Also include any references, that way they can screen you before you see them.

It is not wrong to fax the letter, but then also send the hard copy, and make sure it is on the best cotton fiber paper you can afford, use a distinctive color, but not one that might be a turn off. Usually shades of ivory or gray work well but some shades of blue can work if it fits your personality. Never use pink or yellow, unless the position is for something with minimal responibility.

Good luck on your interview!

It's getting to be about the time to follow up. Kepp in mind it sounds like a good position and she has alot of resumes to look over in addition to yours, while fulfilling her daily resposnsibilities as well. I would just call her, and mention you had met at the job fair and try and get an idea of when they would be moving forward (interviewing, making a decision about the position, etc). Let her know you are still interested, but don't sound pushy. If she responds well, ask to go ahead and schedule an interview if they are beginning that phase already. But keep looking elsewhere and keep following up.
