My parents are Ukrainian, but I was born in the United States. They talked to me in Ukrainian until I started kindergarten, then I learned English and now it's like all that I talk. I Barely ever talk in Ukrainian and it's sad cause I'm losing the culture :[

I want to learn how to speak in Ukrainian again! What are some suggestions?

You have several options.

Your best bet is to express your desire to speak Ukrainian to your family, and practice often. Depending on where you live, there might be courses in Ukrainian as well. Otherwise, you can find a tutor (in person or online lessons) at http://www.language-school-teachers.com

Keep your culture and heritage. And don't let people insist that Ukrainian is Russian. As my (Ukrainian) wife always says - there is more feeling and passion in Ukrainian (although she is a native Russian speaker).

Your family should be able to help you with that. However, if you would like to learn Ukrainian from other people, join Ukrainian Church. They worship in Ukrainian, they also have many groups for people who would like to learn about your culture, language and simply making sure that you do not loose your Ukrainian connection to the rich history of your people.

So what your saying here is you want to learn how to talk Russian.....That's what I am doing...I have friends in the Ukraine, and we have to use the computer to translate...so I have been trying to learn There language and they have been trying to learn English....Now we talk on the phone 1 or 2 times a month ....Since your parents talk the language why not have them pick one day a week and that's all you will talk ...you will soon catch on " DA" you can do it ..it will be fun...good luck ...If I can learn off of Cd's you can do it with the help of your parents...smile

Do volunteer work at a Food Bank. The Salvation Army is a good food provider too and volunteers are welcome. A third
option is to solicit paid employment at grocers that specialize
in European foods.
