Cats don't share our disgust for our own faeces or urine, so they don't do it as revenge. If it's not a medical problem then there will be a behavioural reason. They rely heavily on their sense of smell and familiar scents are comforting to them. (It's why they like to mark their territory by chin rubbing everything). It's not uncommon for cats who are feeling insecure to defecate or urinate on their owners belongings. It's usually misinterpreted as an act of revenge, when in fact the cat is trying to comfort itself by mixing their scent with yours in an effort to strengthen the bond between you.
