An odd question, but not a joke question.

I am an ordained Minister through the Universal Life Church in California. I currently reside in Kentucky. I got my ordination and have done nothing with it in the 7 years since i got it. I was wondering if anyone knew if i could sign/officiate my own marriage? Such as, my fiancee and I are planning a large wedding of our dreams for a few years down the road, but we do not want to wait to get married. Basically we are going to the courthouse and eloping, and then when we have the money, we are going to have a wedding/vow renewal. So yeah, just wondering if i can do that or if i have to get another priest to do so.

You cannot officiate your own ceremony; you need to find another person -priest/minister- to do it.

According to the Universal Life Church the freedom of being a ULC minister includes the legal status to officiate marriages. Ordained ULC ministers are finding themselves officiating marriages for friends, family, and OTHERS. Some ordain to do it once, some find love in being an ordained minister, and open up wedding businesses. There is a certain level of sanctity and fellowship in having family and friends included in a wedding that you preside over. So I would say check with a constitutional lawyer to see if freedom of religion would include officiating at your own marriage.
If not, why not have a good friend go to the ULC website, get ordained, and do the whole thing 'Kosher' so to speak?

You can't officiate your own ceremony. Basically it has to do with being a 3rd party, and appearing - sort of like going to a notary public (which sadly only 3 states are progressive enough to realize that what a wedding officiant does is issue an oath... another soapbox).

i a ULC ordained minister like you, and it's pretty much a no go about you signing your own marriage certificate. pay the money for the license and be married at the court house. it''s cheaper, and you won't lose your ordination status.

Good Luck.

I wouldn't even want to worry about doing that. It sounds like you are deeply in love and excited to begin the rest of your life with your fiance. Let someone else do the officiating so you can just hold her hands in yours and stare into her big beautiful eyes and think about the wonderful life your going to share with her.

I'm a minister through them as well...it only takes about 3 minutes to become one online- why not just have a friend do it for you? Because I'm pretty sure you can't do it for yourself.
