Visit your local music store and buy a beginner's guitar manual, such as Hal Leonard's Beginning Guitar Method One. Within are instructions on how to tune, how to hold, how to pick, and how to form crucial beginning chords. Also, the book will explain basic music theory to help you play the exercises in notation that will lead you to play the enclosed songs.

Master as many chords as you can and the progressions that go in each key.

Practice every day, being mindful that the anguish of the tender fingertips is only momentary (two weeks) and once you get your calluses built you can be on the way to build your ability to play.
