At the core, Christians believe the Gospel.
This is what makes a Christian a Christian!
I have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. God commanded that I be perfect as He is perfect and holy as He is holy, but I have failed to do this. I know that the wages of sin is death...and hell. And I readily admit that in and of myself, I am a sinner, have failed God, and deserve nothing but His displeasure and to go to hell. However, I believe that God is so benevolent, loving, merciful, and gracious that He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die for MY sins on the cross - freely giving me His gift of eternal life. It is a gift, for I do not deserve it. But nonetheless, I humbly accept this gift as one who is unworthy, and therefore count on the righteousness of Jesus Christ rather than my own righteousness before God on Judgement Day.
This is the Gospel.

So, a Christian does NOT "earn" or "merit" salvation in any, way, shape, or form.
Instead, a Christian relies COMPLETELY upon an "alien righteousness" - that is, not upon their "failed" righteousness, but the "successful" righteousness of another - namely, of Jesus Christ.
So, is this the story of a "failure" or a "success"?
