Benefits are many.
Coordination, speed, great cardio exercise, will work your thighs like nothing else.
Thigh muscles are important in boxing because a good punch is thrown when you're grounded. You can brace yourself with the floor and are really solid while punching. This is what they mean by "It's all in the legs". Plus if you skip a lot, you'll be lighter on your feet to move around nd slower to tire.
You can get a nice jumping robe from good sporting good shops. My favorites are the leather ones which rotate inside the handle. They're a bit more expensive, but they're worth it.
Final word of advice. Remember to step. It's left foot, right foot. You're always jumping on one foot. If you want something more advanced after a while, try walking forward and backward while skipping.

Jump roping is the best for stamina, endurance and strengthen the legs. I have lots of different ropes. For fast jumping I use a thin, rubber rope with ball bearing handles. I also have a few weighted ropes, that really get your heart pumping and really builds up leg strength a well as upper body strength.just remember to get a rope that is weighted (not just weight in the handles). I ordered a half pound, a pound and a two pound rope from I think the name is Cra-tex (on the net). You put extra strain on your wrist if the handles have the weights in it, its better to have the whole rope heavier. I remember years ago they had a rubber rope called "heavy rope" Kareem Adul Jabbar endorsed it. I also read where 10 minutes of jump roping is equal to a half hour of jogging.

I agree with Opinionatedkitten. He's given you the best answer so far and the best kind of jumping ropes to get.
Just to add that you might get the leather ropes that gives you the option to put weights in the handle. That way, you can work the upper body too. Good luck!

The late Bruce Lee advocated jump roping as a supplement to jogging. I believe he stated that as a workout,10 minutes of jumping rope is equivalent to 30 minutes of jogging. It also helps develop rhythm and coordination that boxers need to throw multiple combinations.

it's a very good exercise, burns lots of calories and builds your cardiovascular capacity. It must help with footwork a lot otherwise boxers wouldn't be jump roping when they're training.
