Its the only kind I make. I get the steel cut oats so they have a nice texture when cooked. I steer clear of pre-packaged things like instant oatmeal.
A good recipe to try for the fall is below:
1 cup steel cut oats
2 cups water
1/2 cup of raisins
1/2 cup of toasted, chopped walnuts
1/2 tsp of cinnamon
1/2 tsp of pure vanilla extract
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup pure maple syrup
In a saucepan, bring oats, all ingreds, except maple syrup, and water to a boil. Cook for about 2-3 mins, stirring often with a rubber spatula, until water is mostly absorbed and oats are soft. If more water is needed add it a little bit at a time. When oats are cooked, add maple syrup. Serve hot. Add lowfat milk if desired. Serves 2

All the time - I don't like the instant ones.
Did you know that you can make the Old Fashioned kind
in the microwave? It's really easy and very tasty!

OH YEAAAA.
Try this on for size, cook up a batch, add a little peanut butter, and Hershey Chocolate (candy bars are best but the liquid is also fine). Put in a little sugar to taste, and some crushed english walnuts.
Take a spoon and drop lumps onto a cookie sheet and put in the frige...best no-bake cookie on the planet.
My wife sent these to me in Vietnam, a small piece of America right in my litle dirty hands.

yes, but I make it in the microwave. It takes 2-3 minutes for one bowl. Use a big bowl or it will boil over and make a mess.

it's the best! I've got some that takes 30 mins after it reaches a boil. A little milk and butter and I've got a happy warm tummy

Yes, it is the better, healthier version because it is a true whole grain, (instant has been cut) and it is not sugared to death.
Add maple syrup, milk, berries/fruit, honey to flavor it after cooking.

Well, I would not say 10 MINUTES, but, yes, I much prefer "Old-fashioned". I do NOT care for instant.
I prepare it several times a week...When the weather gets colder, I fix it more often.

Why boil when it takes 2 minutes in the microwave and tastes great?
