my dog is so annoying sometimes. we have never used the crate for punishment....its where he sleeps at night. but lately he has decided the crate is not for him. when we tell him to come, he won't. i always take him outside right before he goes to bed. and he just wont come in the house, he makes us chase him around.
we have decided that we will start to keep a short leash on him so he respects us, and knows that he comes when we say come....do you think this is a good idea?
any advice would be great.

My dog does the same thing!
Brat and stubborn as all get out!
Try going for a short walk with dog before bedtime (hope your neighbourhood's safe!), he may need the added breather and exercise before ready to snooze.

The leash is a good idea because it will help you pattern the behavior you want, but forget about being the respect stuff, be the best friend instead. Play the name game. Say the dog's name over and over tossing a treat each time. Play it outside, play it inside. Use really good treats, not just biscuits. Then start adding in a sit command, give a treat. Gently grab the dog's collar and give it a treat. If the dog runs away from you, run the other way. Make the dog 'want' to be with you, not afraid of you, which is really what 'respect' means when people talk about getting it from a dog.

I think your dog knows the routine and he knows that after he comes inside he gets put in the crate. Do you take him out and play with him, and make him come back to you without putting him in the crate?
I think he's just not wanting to go in the crate anymore. Is there any reason why he has to be in the crate to sleep? What if you put the crate in someone's bedroom? Then at least he won't be alone.
Can you put him in the laundry room or something? He doesn't like the crate anymore. If he's not a bad dog when he's out of the crate, then don't put him in it and see how he does.

He is running around outside right before bed because he wants to play. Is he young? It reminds me of a child who doesn't want to go to bed yet, so they beg their parents to stay up, just ten more minutes, Please! I remember that when I was younger. How much exercise does your dog get? I don't think it is so much an obedience issue as it is an energy level issue. It sounds like your dog just needs a long walk at least once a day, and a good romp in the back yard to tire him out. Try increasing his activity level during the day, then he should be more cooperative when it is time to go to bed.

Well Yes it is a good idea. You need to show him you mean buisness. The only time i don't have a leash on my dogs is when it is play time. He needs to learn that when it is time to go potty it is time to go no an ifs or butts about it. And when you tell him to come that is another thing he needs know understand he is to do that no hesitation. It can save his life if he listens to you one day. INfact a few days ago a person i know was telling us they were playing fetch and the ball went across the street and there was a car comming they told there dog to laydown and stay and she did. It saved her life .
I would suggest obiediance training. A good trainer cna help you get your dog in to shape so it will listen to you.

Go for the chain. It will "break her spirit." We've gone through this repeatedly with our dog. She does fine outside by herself for a while then for a time she needs the chain. But it never takes long to break her again.
I dont know about the cage though. Maybe she thinks she doesnt need it anymore. We put a baby gate up to sperate my dog from the kids play area cause she used to destroy their toys. But lately she's been knocking the gate down at night, but hasnt touched the toys...i think it might be her way of saying she doesnt need it anymore and just wants free rome of the house. Maybe yyour dogs doing this too.
good luck.

Yeah, but if you still want him to have some freedom and train him to come back to you here are some tricks:
1)lay down on the ground and wait for him to come over, this will work because dogs are naturally curios and aill come to you if something looks strange.
2) DO NOT try to catch him by chasing him around the lawn this will only trigger a chase responce for him to run further away from you
3) This one sounds weird but try getting down on all fours and stick your butt in the air like a dog that looks like he is playing this will get your dog to think that he is going to play fight you and he will come over
Hope I Helped!

My dog is the same exact way. Nothing has helped with him though. He used to just walk into the crate by himself when we would leave, or when we were asleep, etc. One day he decided he was not going to go in the cage anymore. It was out of the blue. Honestly, he is really mean now. He will not let you put him on a leash and he is just really touchy. It is almost like it traumatized him....

Keep your dog on the leash at night. He might think that you're playing a game.
Is the crate big enough for him? Did you move it to another room? Did you remove a blanket or padding that was in it?

Your dog is still young. He needs training. I suggest you take him to obedience classes. Your local kennel club probably has inexpensive classes. The training is not just for the dog. They provide exercises in the classes, but they also teach you how to train and work with your dog in a way that is fun for both you and your dog. I have taken several of these classes over the years. Whenever I get a new dog I sign us up for puppy obedience classes. I have never regretted it.

I do think it's a good idea. Your dog needs to learn that you are the boss and he has to do what you want him to do and when, not the other way around. My dog used to take advantage of my when I was little but then when I started to get stricter with her she gained like a new respect for me =]
Now she walks right by me and comes when I call her. She doesn't fool around. You just have to be tough and don't let that cute face get to you. BE TOUGH! :) (but still loving)
