I am a believer that there are certain truths out there, bottom lines beyond human perspective if you will. I dont claim to know what they are nor that we as a species will ever know it all nere the less, I think they are there.
So, christians taught me that god is perfect. All powerful, all knowing, etc. I was also tught that the bible being the word of god is perfect as well. Man was in essence the pen god used to write the bible. Now a perfect truth would be unchanging as real today as yesterday and tomorrow. If it was found to be untrue in any circumstance would that not negate the entire concept?
So, throughout the bible are things that have basically expired as humanity progressed. Slavery, stoning people, according to my last question being gay and so on and so forth.
So... what is it then I am not understanding?
Sorry kinda thinking out loud but would appreciate any input etc.

God IS perfect. He doesn't make ANY mistakes. The world sees errors in people and charge them to God. For example, God created a baby in Austria. That he became Adolf Hitler isn't God's fault. Hitler made his own choices to do evil. I'm not sure where you heard that slavery and stoning are extinct, but at least one is alive and well in Africa and another in the Middle East. The Bible IS the inerrant Word of God. For more understanding read the 4th book of the New Testament, John. If you really are a true seeker of the Truth, God will speak to your heart as you read these pages. Pray for God to reveal Himself to you through His Son Jesus. Don't let some of these dear unbelievers place the same veil of unbelief over your eyes as they have done so to themselves, and miss out on the greatest love you will ever know. Seek and you will find. It's a God thing!

Well, I am Eastern Orthodox...and I don't believe that the word of God is perfect...it was inspired of God. But inspiration does not mean the work is perfect...nor perfectly assembled. There are other greatly spiritual works that are not in the bible.

Basically the biblical cannons were simply what was read in the church officially. They would point to the life of Jesus Christ and the teachings. But there were many books that almost made the cannonized scriptures but didn't. By the 4th century they had nailed it down as to what they desired to be in the canons. But...this doesn't mean that we can't learn from other wonderful inspired works.

For my own opinion...I don't exactly like works by Paul...they seem to be very angry..opinionated, against women, and much of his writings is him proving to others how spiritual he is. Not exactly what spiritualy minded people do. He also advocated slavery of fellow christians, eating of food sacrificed before idols.

By the way...no women were at any of these councils when they assembled the canons.

This is an endless question that I'm not sure we'll ever finish answering, but I'll try to touch on the specifics you've given.

First, the Bible never advocates slavery. Where it mentions slavery at all, it's basically just telling people to deal with it the best they can. And if anyone has ever told you that the story of Cain and Abel justifies slavery--well, that's just crap.

Second, lots of the things that you would describe as having expired haven't really. It's more that people kept demanding that God give them more specific applications of basic precepts. For example, I know a lot of people are annoyed by the admonition to women to cover their heads--it used to annoy me. But that was an application of a basic precept. The basic precept in that case was that women should try not to inspire lust. A woman's hair back then was roughly equivalent to breasts now.

I'll tell you two things I've thought about stoning. First, it was happening at a time when all of those precept-application laws were incredibly severe. One of the reasons they got so severe, from my perspective, was that people kept asking God for more specific rules out of some sense that they could earn their salvation by doing everything right. God gave them so many rules in part to show them that there was no hope of them EVER doing everything right, and they needed to find another way to connect with him.

The other thing about stoning is that it was happening a lot while God's people were nomads. Well, honestly, if you've got a rapist in your group, how are you going to imprison him? Your safest course of action is to kill him.

As bottomless as the question is, I'm glad you're asking it. Questions are healthy.

The Only Thing that Never Changes is GOD Almighty.

Now, GOD can Change the Way HE Deals with Other Things--or Change Other Things--but HE dosen't never Change.

The Things HE Creates gets Messed Up at Times Though!!!
Hope this helps.
Hope I understood the Question.

The simple, basic truth is that either you are god or God is God. Your call. If you make yourself out to be a god and reserve the right to set the course for your own life, then be prepared to lean upon your own strength and understanding to maintain stability and purpose. Matters pertaining to your own heart and soul will be served by your own power, such as it may be.
That God shaped hole in your heart is yours to fill. Good luck on that.
If you recognize that there is only one God, then He is enabled to take over in many places that others will fail.

There are still stonings that go on in the world. There was a man who killed his daughter because she did not want to follow his rules. (She wanted to date an infidel). Not long ago, there were people crucified because they were Christians in a non-Christian land. These things are not for the ears of Westerners, so they are not publicized.

The bible, as some sort of inerrant word of God isn't any longer tenable if one is going to take it seriously. But the bible as a written record of how people of faith, in another era, tried to make sense out their world, can still speak truth and wisdom to modern culture. The key is to take it seriously by not taking it literally.

I suggest reading the red letters and matching Jesus's psychology with your own. My perception generated from your writing's and style of is that you are a truth seeker and hate, bitterness, incivility, and what is concept-ed as sin, far from you.
