Do you think that most pit bulls turn out to be really mean , and aggersive , because me and my mother were at a shelter , because we wanted to adopt a dog. So we saw this really nice , dobermin , and pit bull mixed puppy . He was really sweet , and didn't seem aggersive at all , but my mom didn't really want him , because of all the stuff on T.V, like pit bull's attacking someone, and other things. So we ended up not getting him , because of that . What is your opinoin on pit bulls.
Thank you for answering my question !!!

This definatley is not true. Even so if a dog attacks some one it is the owner who was trained badly in handling and caring for dogs becaused they failed to do so properly. Most dogs love being around people even pitbulls. If you train and care for the dog well he will not be agressive or mean. most dog attacks occur because people leave their big dogs outside without a leash and dogs think of where they live as something they have to protect so if someone goes by they think it is a threat to their owner and territory. You HAVE TO train your dog, its not automatic that they will refuse to protect their home and be nice to strangers if not taught to do so. Most dogs will even back off if they relize you are not there to harm them. ex.:if you are running by a house and a dog wnts to protect his home and starts running after you, turn around and start running after the dog and he will relize that because he started to attack you, you are going to start with him and that you meant no harm in the first place. It's proven to work ive done it twice. If you do not believe pitbulls can be nice then watch Ceasar Millans show on the national gegraphic channel THE DOG WISPERER. its apretty good show. Also Ceasar has a lot of knowledge of pittbulls, he owns about 15 of them and not one has gotten in a fight with one another. his favorite pitbull's name is popeye.Popeye has only one eye from when he use to be in dog fights. Since Ceasar has adopted him he has learned to be "calm and submisive" to humans and has not gotten into a fight since, he was retrained.
This definatley proves that these dogs are no more dangerous than a chiwowa can be.
If you do not believe me after reading all of this info and me typing it all idon't like you very much and we've just wasted a lot of time.
Hope i helped!

There is no real way of knowing since it is a mix - responsible breeders with dogs of sound temperament wouldn't be mixing dogs so you can assume that the dogs used for the mix were not likely the best quality animals in any respect. Mixing two dogs that are stable can produce mixed breeds that are unstable but mixing two of unknown temperamental qualities is just a big guess as to what you will get. I don't think that because of the specific breeds used for the mix you stand any more of a chance of having an unstable dog as you can mix any unstable dogs of any breeds and produce dangerous dogs. I don't think as a breed that Pit Bulls are necessarily unstable except they have been being bred irresponsibly for a while and there are a lot of them produced that are indeed unstable because of that, just like any popular breed except that some are bred specifically to be 'mean' which usually indicates that someone doesn't know much and thinks unstable is protective when it isn't, so the percentage of unstable dogs of that breed are now quite high because of the poor breeding occuring. I think if he were properly evaluated by trained, knowledgeable staff that the likelyhood of him being a suitable companion is fairly good though so it will depend on the staff at the shelter and their capabilities. Many shelters now days don't take on the liability of homing several breeds, including Pit Bulls, because of the poor breeding and potentials so for this shelter to be doing it, maybe they have a good evaluation crew. Another consideration your mom might have is that many landlords and homeowners cannot get homeowners insurance with certain breeds of dogs or mixes so you might want to check and make sure this isn't the case before making a decision about a Pit Bull mix.

Pit bulls are not by nature agressive... they are by nature muscular and have really strong jaws, and that is why people use them for fighting.
If the dog is at a shelter, I wouldn't worry. Shelters (although I can't speak for all) usually have such overpopulation problems that they can only afford to put the BEST dogs up for adoption... I'm sure you see on shows like Animal Cops all the time when the cutest dog ever bites a fake hand they put near him when he's eating and then they have to put him down... that's definitely a reality.
I would talk to the shelter people about what tests they've done, and show your mom a lot of internet research. I'm considering a pit bull myself, they are really similar to Labradors in personality, faithful, eager to please, great running partners, and you are really able to trust them, if you're sure the dog has a clean history. Especially since the dog is a puppy, there's hardly a chance he's had any irreversible training. Get some info together, convince your mom, and GO GET HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Pit bulls can be great dogs if trained properly. The reason there are so many aggressive people is that stupid people who want aggressive dogs tend to get pits and intentionally make them mean. Pits have some tendency to be dog aggressive but many pits get along fine with other dogs if socialized properly at a young age. The only reason stupid people flock towards pits when they want a mean dog is that if they do bite they can cause a lot of damage. It depends on the dog and more importantly the owner how it will turn out.

A dog will turn out to be mean and aggressive if the owner is mean and aggressive. Seriously, don't buy in to the reputation thing. Pit bulls are wonderful family dogs and so are dobermans. It used to be Rottweilers that got all the negative attention. Pits are good fighters and so there is a market for it. Whatever dog you get has the potential for meanness. If it is not treated properly.

Dogs are usually bred for temperament. It's just that you can breed in bad, as well as good, in any breed.
In any case, a Pit is not the dog for an inexperienced, timid, unsure or fearful person. It would be the recipe for disaster. Your Mom has made the right choice for her family.
I have seen well bred dogs, of all breeds (including Golden Retrievers), ruined by owners who did not give the dog proper guidance as a puppy. One very handsome male Golden that belonged to our neighbor, bit my son, and within a year another little child. His owner had never owned a dog and was timid with it. The dog was not "leadership material" but was forced to take on a role his master could not fill. Unfortunately he was a bad judge of things - it almost cost his life - he got solitary instead.

You are going to get so many opinions. But with every answer you get, I think it is important to know if that person has actually met a pit bull. Many people haven't. I have an American Pit Bull Terrier, and I have worked with MANY of them, through volunteering at an animal shelter, working at a vet clinic, and through friends and family. I can tell you that they are VERY sweet dogs by nature. I fall in love with every pit bull I meet. They are goofy, sweet, and very friendly.
My entire family used to be against pit bulls, until I adopted one of my own from an animal shelter. They used to fall for all the stereotypes that the media put out there. But now they LOVE my pit bull, and she is always welcome in their home.

Totally depends on the ownership, original owner and how well the dog's been socialized, treated etc.
How old was the dog at the shelter? The only concern there is that no real history of the dog is available. He may be super "people-friendly", but towards other animals may be another story.

if you adopt a pit bull or any dog that looks like one you have to be prepared for prejudice. I know people who have nice pit bulls and they love them, but they say they will never get another one because people are too rude to them. Some people hate pit bulls so much they go out of their way to poison them.
So even if pits are lovely dogs, there are plenty of ugly people out there who hate them anyway.

The truth is only two to three people die a year from dog attacks. Compared to the hundreds of thousands that die from smoking related illnesses, as well as car accidents (even bee stings!), you shouldn't be all that concerned with the breed of the dog you were looking at. Pits are only aggressive because people make them aggressive. They get a bad reputation because they are an ideal fighting dog, full of muscle and determination to please their owners. But what you don't hear about is who sweet and devoted they are to their owners.
Pits are very sensitive dogs as well. I volunteer for the CT Humane Society, and we have one sweet ex-fighting pit who must be carried in and out of the shelter to go on her walks (two to three times a day) because she prefers the security of being held over fending for herself down on the ground.
