A lot of agencies do not require the lie box. While the box is a good investigative tool I feel it really is not useful in hiring. There are many who do require it.
My former department, the second largest in the country, does not require the box.
I have also sat on hiring boards for a number of department that do not require the box.
Your question said academies. In many places going to an academy is not a prerequisite to being hired. Most really large cities hire you first and send you to their own or another academy.

Every major agency and many smaller agencies will require a polygraph exam as part of the pre-employment screening.

The polygraph is an examination where the evaluator / interviewer will review a list of questions with you before the test. They will include information picked from your background check. The actual test it self is all YES and NO questions.

They are looking for honesty. They may ask you, during the pre-test interview.... "Have you ever done narcotics and when was the last time you did?” You then TELL THEM THE truth. If the truth is you smoked weed in college one time 2 years ago, you tell them that.

Then during the test it self, they will ask "other than what we have discussed, have ingested any illegal narcotics in the past 2 years?".... You answer YES or NO.

The entire test will be the same way. During the pre-interview is where you explain all of your answers in advance.

They want the truth. Any and all untruthfulness will get you tossed.

And the polygraph has only three results:

Truthful

Deceptive

Inconclusive.

The last two are not good for your hiring process.

Tell the truth at all costs.

And, if they seem to think you are being deceptive, then they should conduct more interviews with you and a more comprehensive background check in the area where they detect deception.

I have worked for two different agencies in Wisconsin, The State Patrol, and currently a city PD. Both required me to agree to a polygraph on the application, but neither one of them actually gave me one.

I would guess it varies from department to department, but I would expect most would give you the test.

Its is not mandatory for a law enforcement agency to give a polygraph test. Its optional but most agencys do it. I do know there are a few police agencys that do not require a polygraph.

I hope so. I don't want liars in uniform.
