Definitely get a digital so you don't spend a lot of money on developing pictures of half of someone's face! I know the perfect answer to this one as I went through it last Christmas.
I bought my almost 6 year old one of those kid's digital cameras. It totally sucked! You couldn't take a picture of anything and expect to be able to see what it was! Completely horrible. I can't stress this enough, don't buy one. It also did not have a viewing area like on a real camera or a flash. So, after christmas I kept my eye out in the classifieds we have at work and bought him a used Kodak 3.1 megapixel real camera for $30. It takes great pictures but is uncomplicated enough for him to master the basics of turn on, point, shoot, review pics, turn off. It of course also has a bunch of other settings, but most adults don't even use those!
