Lets just assume for a second that god does exist. if he does sit by allowing this to happen when he is capable of stopping it why would anyone worship that.
Even if god were shown to me, came down in a golden chariot to my front door, I still would never, ever worship any Abrhamic god.

Good question.
I am a Christian, but recently, questions such as this have been arising in my life, and although I still believe in God, I am really hoping for some sort of proof that we aren't all doomed, because honestly, right now, it seems as though we all live just to suffer, and die.
I don't understand atheists because without a God, where did we come from? But I totally understand those that think there is a higher being, but just don't really believe in Christianity. It kind of looks as though God is breaking his own rules about "Love thy enemy". Apparently, we have to love our enemies, but not our children, because they're the ones who get raped by monsters such as John Couey. So, I'm supposed to love John Couey (the enemy) and justify what happened to the little girl by saying "God has a plan".
I'm just as confused as you are.

Man is responsible for the problems of this world. God will guide and inspire us. We have very serious problems in this world, that are not being properly addressed. Consquences result from these problems. Our society is loaded with abusive conditions and abusive people. Abused people get damaged, and turn into monsters, children pay the price sometimes. The disease of abuse in our society, has very ugly symptoms, and needs to be focused on and remedied. We also have a lot of other extremely serious problems, that if not address, will produce some not so pretty results. We need to become spiritually strong enough, to handle this reality in a lot better way, than we have been, in addressing the horrific condition that exist here on earth.

God intervened back in the old testament and people say how God slaughtered and condoned many people. That child gets to be with God and there is a purpose for everything. Some get to live a beautiful life and some do not. The ones that have a story like that little girl is painful to bear. The story however will help me to be thankful of my own children and to hold them tight and see how precious life is. Satan has won your opinion of who was really at fault. Satan snuffed out the little girl and got you to blame God for it. There is a purpose in all things and we can not have an answer for it all. God will take that poor child into His arms and comfort her better than this world could. I can not wait until I go on to be with the Lord. I

God is not sitting "up there" using us as chess pawns, moving us around the way He wants, messing with our heads, etc. He does not "just allow" bad things to happen. What was given to human beings is free will. It is up to society to punish these monsters and obviously we're not getting the word out that doing these things will get you immediate death. These disgusting globs of flesh need to be put in a cell and locked away for the remainder of their days, not let out time and again.
It's free will that enables a person to keep drinking or stop (or get help) it's free will that keeps a person sleeping all day on the couch instead of hunting a job..etc....

You could say that for every horrible thing that happens... believe me there are a lot... every minute either someone is raped, or murdered, or beat, or tortured...
God has a purpose for it all, be it only for you to ask this question, read all the Christian's answers and then later in your life remember and become a Christian... who knows if it will happen but God has a plan, and you can't deny it.

God was doing two things that he always does.
He was respecting the free will of a human being, even though the human being was doing something horrendous. I'm fairly certain most of the posters here don't want God to start interfering with everything we do that he doesn't like, so I think your objection, assuming you have one, is regarding where to draw the line. God doesn't draw a line--free will is free will.
He was also offering grace to that little girl, and to the man abusing her. God is with us in our darkest moments, whether we invite him to be there or not.
I don't expect my answer to comfort you--I don't have comfort to offer in this situation. But I believe that God offered his comfort to that child, and will offer comfort to her family and everyone else hurt by this senseless tragedy.

Everybody dies and everybody suffers. Its terrible but I never heard any promises that things would be different. Mans point of view is limited to mans expirience and unfortunately some things are beyond our understanding.
