I did a google search, and various sources list variations of meanings:

place of peace
city of peace
dwelling of peace
founded in peace
sacred peace
place of safety
teaching of peace (with the claim that "Jeru" is related to the word "torah")

apparantly the second half of the word, 'salem" , is the word peace (a variant of "shalom"). the city of Salem is mentioned early in Genesis, and some of the sources I checked say Jerusalem means "the new Salem"
