If you must use the PS3 to play PS2 games, then the 80 gb is the better version for you.

If you don't plan on using the PS3 to play PS2 games, then the 40 gb version is the better value. The 40 gb does not have backward compatibility for PS2 games, but it can play PSX games.

Both the 80GIG and 40GIG versions of the PS3 have the PS2 compatibility removed from them. The 80gig model has LIMITED PS2 compatibility - through software emulation - not all PS2 games will work. Really your best bet is to try to find one of those 60GIG models. The 60GIG model was the last model to have PS2 hardware inside of it.

Here is your answer: See this website for a chart to side-by-side compare the 40, 60, 80 and even the Xbox360.

For me I'd get the 80gig model (I bought the 60gig model last month before they were all gone, but i have alot of PS2 games). Its only $100 more and the hard drive is twice the size, plus you get 1 game and if you order from Ebgames you can get the 5 free blu ray movies free offer. The 80gig model also has Memory Card inputs unlike the 40gig model.

I also have a feeling that in the near future the larger hard drive will be important as the PS3 is going to be a multimedia hub for streaming videos and other things.

I hope that helps.

I think that you should get the 80GB PS3 with Motorstorm. Basically, the 40GB PS3 isn't backward compatible, so if you want to play your old PS1 and PS2 games then get the 80GB PS3.

Just get the 80GB PS3 because it has everything that you will ever need such as the Digital Camera flash card slots, 2 more USB ports, and PS1 and PS2 game compatibility.

60GB has the best backwards compatibility with PS2 games (it has two chips from PS2 - Emotion Engine (PS2's CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer - GPU). 20GB had it too, but it had no memory card reader and wi-fi, anyway, it's not on sale anymore. 60GB isn't manufactured anymore - if you need to play PS2 games - get one now.

80GB has only one chip from PS2 - Graphics Synthesizer. Less PS2 games can be played (~80%).

40GB can't play PS2 games at all (no PS2 chips), only PS1 games can be played. It has 2 USBs instead of 4, no memory card reader. It has wi-fi.
