I've just started working through a temp agency and have received my second pay check. The 1st one had about 4.1% 'USS tax' taken from it while the second had 8.6% deducted. I know it's not Social Security or Medicare and it isn't unique to Washington State, where I'm employed, either. Does anybody know what this is and why it has varied so radically from one paycheck to the next?

Thanks MBATXguy! I have called the staffing agency who didn't know but said they'd call finance tomarrow as they're gone for today. I will also give the WA Dept of Revenue a call as they REALLY ought to know. Good idea about the hours worked ratio to tax deducted. Thanks again, mothercary

Maybe it is a typo (mistake). I would talk to your payroll clerk first thing tomorrow morning. I have never heard or seen an "USS Tax". I 'm sorry that I do not have any more useful information for you about your issue.

Okay.. I am going to try to give you my best guess on this based on my research... I saw where different people including some supposed CPA's have tried to advise you on this tax..

Honestly, I believe this is for a tax deferred investment plan..

However, I found reference to a USS tax plan mentioned in SEC documents..

I would recommend contacting the Washington State Department of Revenue (the state taxing authority)..

Here is the number: 1-800-647-7706

I am sorry I could not be of more help.. I am thinking though that your first paycheck may have been for a partial time period, while the second was for a full work period.. Maybe I am wrong, but wanted to at least give you some advice on who to contact..

I never heard of a USS tax. Ask your payroll department, they should be able to tell you.
