If you're from America, England or Canada (and you're really cashed up), the Eastern Suburbs, Northern Suburbs, North West, some places around the South West.

Avoid places in the south of Sydney like Fairfield, Liverpool, Cabaramatta, Glenfield south to Campbelltown as these places are turning into Ghetto's.

That depends entirely on your interests, finances, family etc. If you are young and want nightlife, the northern suburbs are not for you but the inner west - Newtown, Glebe or inner east - Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Paddington certainly are. If you want surf beaches close by, Bondi, Randwick, Coogee, Bronte, Maroubra if you want to be near the city or Manly and further north if you want to be some distance from the city. If you want to hang out with the very rich, Point Piper, Darling Point, Rose Bay, Double Bay and Vaucluse are for you. If you can see the harbour, add half a million to the price. The Bridge? Add a million.

If you want space for a family then the outer suburbs are yours including the northern suburbs but you could also consider the Blue Mountains, the Central Coast and the Sutherland Shire and further south.

There is something in Sydney for everyone and all suburbs have their good and bad points.

Sydney property is expensive, a top price of 320k will only buy something in a lower socioeconomic area. The further you are willing to travel the more your money will buy, that will propbably mean a commute for 2+ hours each way for work

Assuming you don't mind heavy traffic.

North shore area (Hornsby though to Manly)
Northern Eastern Suburbs (Watsons bay, Vaucluse etc)
Sutherland Shire (Cronulla through to Menai/Ilawong)

That would depend on your budget.
I have a relative on the Northern Beaches (Avalon) which is really georgous and not "city-bound" at all, but it can get a little pricey.
