The degree of prosperity in a nation, is measured by income levels, quality of housing and food, medical care, educational opportunities, transportation, communications, and other measures.
The standard of living in different countries is frequently compared based on annual per capita income. On an individual level, the standard of living is a measure of the quality of life in such areas as housing, food, education, clothing, transportation, and employment opportunities.
Considering all that, China's STANDARD of living is generally NOT high at all.

Progress is coming slowly and standards of living are getting better as economic progress increases (and so does environmental degradation, not unique to China). A middle class is now emerging, and so is a very small class of very rich people. There are still hundreds of millions of people who live close to poverty levels but China has made tremendous progress in the past 20 years. But lets not forget that while it is easy to criticize other countries, we often forget or conveniently ignore the fact that there are also people living at or below poverty levels and in abject conditions, in 2007, in Michigan, Louisiana, Alabama, in many Native reserves in Northern Canada, etc.

Industry is leaving it a degraded environment, the water undrinkable, the air unbreathable, the traffic unbearable... Well, aside from that, it can still be an enjoyable place.
