The wingspan of the 747-400 is 211' 5".
The 747-8 is 224' 7".

The wing of the 747-8 will be larger In span) than the 747-400 and roughly the same area (note that -400 has winglets, whereas the -8 has raked wingtips instead, like 787). The wing will also be thicker.

i dont think its smaller, it might be thinner?? but you have got to remember in the middle and late 1960,s when the 747 was being desined and tested there was no where near the computers they have now. They design and test a plane on the computer and make minor changes for better aerodynamics,,, so a 1969 747 is not your 2008 747

Im not sure if you mean because it is larger or not but if it is larger there are a few reasons it could be.

For one, Boeing has developed new materials to build the aircraft lighter which means, lighter aircraft needs less lift.
Boeing has also reduced drag on wingtips by developing winglets that reduce drag. Less wing means less drag which reduces fuel cinsumption. All of these things, I'm sure, were factors in their design plans.
