my dog has been shaking her a lot lately.
brought her to the vet and he said her ears look fine but they look inflamed..they get red and warm then get white and cool and back to red. he wants me to put some ear drops but he said she may have an allergy. can i try anything over the counter to see if it's an allergy..like antihistimine...he also said something about a steroid shot but can't remeber what it was for.

Maybe you should take her to another vet if you don't trust this one she may be getting a ear infection or ear mites I would get her rechecked

your dog might have a yeast infection in her ears or ear mites. your vet should take a sample from the ear canal so he can be sure how to treat it.you can clean out her ears with a ear syringe and use equal parts of white vineagar and warm water that has cooled off from a kettle.hold her ears like a rabbit straight up and gentley squeeze it into her ears then massage the base and let her shake out the excess.after use a kleenex and wipe them out,get a dropper and put a few drops of mineral oil or baby oil in to soothe them.do this twice a day and see if it helps,if not get another opinion. good luck.steriods are for infection and helps with infamation of the dogs body that is injured like a pulled limb, arthritis and allergies etc.

A steroid shot is to reduce inflammation and relieve allergy symptoms.
It seems your vet doesn't know why your dog is getting the inflamation and he suspects allergies. Please talk to your vet about what to do and what dose is safe for your dog.

I know alot of people are going to tell you to use Benadryl but you really need to be very sure it is safe for YOUR dog and exactly how much to give your dog if any ok.

Benedryl for small dogs 25 mg, large dogs 50 mg.

A steroid shot would keep your dog from reacting to whatever is causing his allergic reaction. If it's allergies, her ears should clear up pronto.

If your dog is shaking her head and they get red and hot, there is a problem. Fund a new vet. Could be mites, infection, fungus, virus, if she is long eared it could moisture, and a host of other problems. I would definitely get a second opinion and get a medication from someone who knows what they are doing.
