I just passed my California Property and Casulty exam last week and my boss said he won't give me a raise. I took the exam because the other licensed person is leaving next week. If I wouldn't have passed he really wouldn't have anyone who is licensed. He paid for the first test (which I didn't pass) but I paid for the 2nd test, the crash course and fingerprinting. I really don't want to tell you guys how much he pays me, because it's embarassing. I took the job because I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn something new, I've been in the mortgage industry for the past 5 years. I took the low pay because I knew I had no experiance in Insurance, but thought I would get more money once I got licensed. My question is should I get another job? I feel bad that he paid for the first test and now I am just going to leave. I have a 1 year old son and could really use a raise, anyone have any advice? I also wouldn't know were to even look for a job?? Can anyone help?

Yep, get another job. IME, agents who lowball a csr going in, are going to always be cheap. You only seriously get increases in pay, by changing employers.

Regarding where to look . . . ask underwriters you talk to, if they know of any agencies looking for CSR's.

Where are you located in California? did you and your boss have an agreement for a raise if you passed the P&C exam? Did he agree to give you commissions as an increase instead of a raise for the policies that you close?

He possibly wants to get you trained in sales before he increases your income. I would discuss it with him and if he has no plans for your future, I would find another agency to work with in your area.

If the boss is not willing to give you a raise....then look for another opportunity. Work the job you have - learn as much as you can and boggie on if you need to. You have bills to pay.

You have nothing to feel guilty about. He should be ashamed. You did all that work and he gives you nothing? I don't know much about the P&C criteria, but it seems like another insurance company would be interested in hiring someone with that quaification. Put together your resume and get looking!! Good luck.

Don't feel guilty for one minute...you have an obiligation to take care of yourself and your son....he won't feel guilty when he underpays the next person. Good luck to you in your job search.

PS. Don't quit this job until you have another one lined up.
