Is it haram (forbidden) to listen to music and to sing?
I mean, does it mean that you can't ascociate with music?

t's just because I had a debate with my friend about it. He's a Muslim from India, and he says that music and movies are haram. Then he says he still does it. Then I said to myself, "That's hypocrisy." I said to him, "Don't label this or that as haram if you can't follow it." Because once you say something is haram but you still do it, Allah S.W.T Knows how terrible the punishment would be.

My opinion is that you can listen to music as long as it doesn't make you forget your duties and music that has a meaning. I said to him, "If you're watching movies with your parents as you do, doesn't that strengthen your relationship between you and them?"

Please tell me you opinions, and put your sources if you took referred from the Qur'an, Hadiths or anything.
May Allah S.W.T guide us all.

Salam

Muhammed SAW and the sahabi did not have electricity and these devices of digital nature. There is content that should be advised as haram and that is true to those things that are anti god and such, we have a responsibility when it comes to what we eat so why not what we hear also.

The mind does react, and there is no problem in enjoyment and entertainment if its in a good way, but if your under a thrash and hurt yourself or others I think its pretty much frowned upon. I have yet to see anyone dress up like elvis and come to the masjed. Well then that would be funny wouldn't it, maybe I will try it next week LOL!

Your friend was right. Music, singing, movies (dancing publicly and in pairs with mixed genders) are obviously haram and it seems i am the only one here who thinks this way but anyway. I hope that you can benefit from the link below. You will find a very good answer why music and the above mentioned things are haram.
This is also not an opinion but a FACT, so please take it seriously. Just because many "muslims" listen to music it does not mean a thing.. Just because the majority do something it will not legitimate the act, right?
Think about it.. 4 milliard ppl on the Earth are do fornicate daily, only we muslims don't do that.. and don't say sex does not strengthen relationships please :)
I know it is a good and pleasant thing, but still haram, so brothers and sisters, please try to quit listen and watch it.
Only some nasheeds are okay but they are not really nasheeds as they have no music just a recitation, that is acceptable, but no music.. no matter if it is sami yusuf or dawuud xy (i don't know his name)

The prohibition on music is not just Sunna but also in the Quraan, so please think about it!

Just one more thing: this is for the asker: please try to be calmer and nicer with non-muslims. This is a public forum and non-muslims may join us here sometimes, please try to be calm and not agressive to them, as we are responsible for the image of Islam. Thank you in advance!

As long as there is a limit to it. Meaning U still do not neglect the prayer to be done, U still know that there is no mixture of gender. no liquor, nothing which is Haram in Islam is being use, provided or carry out during the event. and the song is not something against the religion or any other religion ritual and does not meant to humiliate, insult, belittle or any of its kind against the Muslim ppl, Allah swt , Prophet Muhammad and etc.

u want to listen to the kind of music that is being played today???? its nothing but garbage that ppl r saying, and lil do they know they will be accounted for what they uttered too, Nasheeds Is more haram then the other music why? because that Act right there singing About Allah his messengers, books, ayahs and so on is imitating the christians(kufars), what do they do? they sing about jesus and how u should follow jesus and love jesus, the bible and all that other stuff, when none has the right to be worshipped but ALlah Alone, muhammad didn't give dawah by singing to ppl,or singing to his followers giving a kutbah; what did he go up to some jew or christian and sanged to them LAAAAAAAAAILAAAAAHAAAILLLLLLLALLAAAAAAAAAAAH(note) he probably said it in a strongly voice but he didn't sing to that person sayin worship ALlah alone, u get the Idea don't u? nasheeds is an innovation, that some muslims think is good, when its not and muhammad(s) talks about Innovation, and how the believers and ppl will think its ok.

I think you have to draw a line between two extremes. It is qouted that the holy prophets once passing from a place from where "voice" of music was ensuing, he went away hurriedly putting his fingers in his ears.At the other instance once he went to his house with his companion Hazrat Abu Bakar prophet's young wife with her girl friends was listening to songs of those girls at the rythem of a small musical instrument.Hazrat Abu Bakar asked the girls to stop but the Holy Prophet allowed them to continue. From these instances, it can be inferred that light music just for innocent celebration of a good time for a while is okay, but if it is organised in professional way that creates lust, deliquency and forgetfulness from duties was not liked by the Holy Prophet

salaam i myself am very confused on this matter
in one place i think its ok as long as you dont forget your duties.its like a knife is very dangerous in the wrong hands and end up killing somone, now do we blame the knife or the person, just like music do we blame the music or the person who hasnt got enough willpower to remember his duties.i think as long as it brings you closer to allah and then there is no harm.
someone once sadi that even this rapping form of music is to attract some of the younger youth towards islam as the mullahs are sitting inside the mosque, they not gonna draw anyone in.poeple already in the mosque are ok they will listen to the mullahs, what about the kids hanging on the roads etc sometimes its only the rapp groups or ppl like that that can get them interested in islam thru music now is that a good thing if ppl off the streets come into the fold of islam thru music or not???
some say its toally forbidden full stop.now i have an issuse with that as i personally do listen to music.i listen t all types of music from bhangra to rock to pop to qwallis and nasheeds.now does this make me a bad muslim as i also pray five times a day read quran daily and try to be a good muslim woman to the best of my ability????

Its no where mentioned that Music is Haram but it is strictly forbidden in Islam. Flute is haram and any instruments with strings isn't allowed, and the drums. Only Duff is allowed. Now which music is composed without these instruments? if there is a music without these instruments then we can listen to it for sure.

And the lyrics, plays a great role too.

Asalamu Alaikum, brother.
I don't think that music and singing is Haraam. But there's a hadith on it and I remember its exact translation:
"Songs make hipocrosy grow in the heart, just as water makes crops grow."
I asked the same question as you. My Islamic teacher said that you can limit yourself in listening to music. Like Muslims who do not listen to music at all, are perfect muslims. And he said that muslims who listen to Islamic songs are still good. But muslims who listen to rap and hip hop, are not good Muslims. I mean, it makes sense. The reason why it is bad for muslims to listen to rap and hip hop is because they have bad words and it's just totally not Islamic. So I don't listen to rap and hip hop. But I do listen to Islamic songs like Sami Yusuf, Hamza Robertson, Yusuf Islam, and other muslim singers. So I personally think that rap and hip hop is Haraam. My own Islamic teacher said that he listens to Sami Yusuf, so it's OK. I hope this helped you brother.
Asalamu Alaikum

I completely agree with and support "sen b" on this.
It entirely depends on the content of the music you're listening to.

And it doesn't have to be a muslim you're listening to. If it benefits you, or at least, does you no harm, do it. You are using Yahoo! when it's not created by Muslims, aren't you? :D
But is that a sin? No! Coz you're using it for a good purpose!

"Beat on drums for it" Is prophet Muhammad's advice, talking about weddings.

Would the prophet ever advise you with anything that's a sin? :)
