you should also be aware that there are often two names for the same battle, depending on which side is calling it.....this is due to the South naming them after the nearest town and the North using Maps and naming them after the major geographical feature of the area....Bull Run (creek) and Manassas Junction, Antitem(creek) and Sharpsburg (MD)Stones River and Mufreesboro(tn),Elkhorn Tavern and Pea Ridge(Ark)..another note of interest is that the Farm that the major part of 1st Manassas(Bull Run) was fought on was owned by the man who owned the house that the surrender was signed in at Appomattox(he saw the first battle, said to heck with this, sold his farm and moved as far as he could get west..right into the final surrender)The actual Courthouse was closed so they asked to use his living room which was next door..and there are generally agreed to be 58 "major" battles

OK, 1861 The First Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) in late July
1862, things really geared up
The Battle of Fort Donaldson Tennessee
The Battle of Shiloh
The Peninsula Campaign Virginia (Many Battles part of one big battle)
The Second Battle of Bull Run
The Battle of of Antietam
1863
The Battle of Fredericksburg
The Battle of Chancelorsville
The Battle of Vicksburg
Battle of Gettysburg (The Battle of Brandy Station Preceeded the Battle of Gettysburg but you only want 15)
1864
The Battle of the Wilderness Virginia
The Battle of Atlanta, Georgia
The Battle of Chickamauga, Tennessee
The Battle of Petersburg, Virginia
1865
The Battle of Appomatox Court House
There were a lot more battles than these but I think most people will agree that most of what I've listed above were major milestones in the war.
I didn't list the siege of Fort Sumter because it was hardly a battle at all. Only one guy was killed in the siege, and that was by accident.
Some would argue that the Battles of Fort Donaldson and Stones river weren't major milestones, but they were, they secured the Mississippi river system for the Union Army.
Like the UH-1 Helicopter in the Vietnam war, the River boat was the major player in the western theater of the war.
Speaking of the West, there were some small fights between Texas and New Mexico and even a Confederate invasion of Colorado that ended in a defeat for the Confederates. In one battle in Arkansas at Pea ridge, Cherokee Indians fighting for the Confederates scalped dead Union soldiers.
The Battle of Pea Ridge was not however, a major milestone of the war.
Another interesting side note was the invasion of Indiana and Ohio in 1863 by the Confederate Raider John Hunt Morgan.
Morgan was finally captured but not before drawing off hundreds of thousands of Union troops bound for Tennesee and Georgia to go chasing after him. Later, Morgan escaped from Prison and went back to fighting again. He was captured later and executed. The Yankees really hated Morgan.

Most Casualities in the shortest time..Cold Harbor..8000 in 30 minutes(this is where the idea of "dog tags" originated....union troops looking at the dug in Southrons and seeing what they had to do to attack began pinning their names and addresses on the backs of their uniforms so they wouldnt be buried unidentified),Biggest fought on American soil ever..Gettysburg..most Casualities in 1 day of battle Sharpsburg...the Vicksburg seige is so texbook perfect that Grants solution is still being taught at West point and the War College
