Any cook book I have read says ''Fry''.

As you can guess, I'm no cook, but I do try.

Boil?
Roast?
Steam?

Can you tell I know nothing about this!!

I think mushrooms are best grilled and sauteed.

Just add a teaspoon of oil or butter to the pan, warm slightly, and add the mushroom (I like mine thickly sliced, but chopped will work well too depending on what you are making and you preference) and put in the pan. Keep at a low to medium heat. If you cover the mushrooms they will steam a little. Again it depends on your preference. Cook until the color changes to a brown and taste them to find the texture, temperature and flavor that you like. I don't like the taste of raw mushrooms, but I love well cooked mushrooms.

Grilling is great for shitakes - just place them on the grill whole after taking off the stems. Cook through. The juices will start to come out, you will smell them cooking, and the color will change.

Smaller mushrooms should be put on a grill plate or skewered. Follow the same method.

Mushrooms absorb any liquid that comes in contact with them, so when cleaning just use a moist paper towel to wipe them off so that they don't get water logged. You can put them in a marinade for a few minutes after cleaning also, but don't marinate them for too long - again the 'water logging'. You can also brush some sauce on them while grilling.

weeelll, that depends what type of mushrooms, but with normal mushrooms chop them up into quite sizable chunks, i cut them into quarters then put them in a frying pan with lots of oil at a medium low setting, then either cut or squish two medium garlic sections, if you cut them make sure its very fine and you get all juices, then, keep frying and turning them with the the garlic while adding oil, until the are dark brown and have absorbed almost all the oil and are nice and chewy.

then put in dish and enjoy
i prefer to use olive oil to cooking oil as it improves the taste
you can also add herbs and what not to add extra taste!

also another good recipe is cheese stuffed mushrooms, quite simple, just bake them with a little olive oil, 5 or so minuits before they will be perfect add the cheese, grated is best as its quicker to cook and less dense, experiment with different cheeses to find the right type for you, chedder will do to start with, keep cooking until the cheese is melted and bubbling a little then take out and serve on a flat plate with salad!!!
with or without stems works, i prefere with as it breaks up the cheese but depends on the size of mushroom.
first tried this in a turkish resturan and it was to die for, went back the following night and ordered the same!

hope i helped, and enjoy!!!

The best and simplest way to enjoy mushrooms is to fry them in a little butter and serve them piled onto buttered toast with seasoning to taste. However, if you want to try something different..slice or chop them and boil then for ten minutes it either lightly salted water or water to which you have added a stock cube of your own choice..actually a delicious broth!
Fry a finely chopped onion in a little butter until it softens then add finely sliced mushrooms and continue to saute gently until the mushroom are tender as well, add a pinch of black pepper and half a pint of single or double cream then serve as a sauce with steak or chops and baked potatoes.
Take a couple of large flat mushrooms, remove the stems and then chop the stems really finely with about half a small onion, mix this with breadcrumbs and mixed herbs or, far easier, a packet of stuffing in whatever flavor you prefer
made up as per the packages instructions, place them in a roasting dish and bake them for 30 mins at 170c. serve them with meat or simply with rice or salad. Or you can wrap a slice of bacon around each stuffed mushroom before backing and secure it with a cocktail stick.
The most decadent way of serving mushrooms that i have ever tried is to fry them in a little butter and then serve them on lightly toasted brioche or croissants...totally addictive!

Do not boil mushrooms, they are like sponges and will absorb a lot of water and be mushy. You can steam them in a veggie steamer or in the microwave with a little water in the bowl. Personally, I love pan frying them or cooking them on the grill with a little butter and olive oil.

All of the above, they can be asses to soups, stews, spaghetti gravy.
They can be roasted and stuffed on a grill or in an oven.
Alone or with stuffing depending on the type of mushroom.
Steamed? well I am sure there is some recipe out there somewhere for steamed mushroom....but I don't know about it.
My favorite
is to take either crab or spinach stuffing and fill mushrooms and sprinkle Romano cheese, then broil in the oven.
But crab stuffing is my personal favorite!!!!

slice em and saute em in butta for 2 minutes.

Or Toss them into a hot skillet that you just got through
cooking a thick t-bone steak in, while waiting fer that steak to rest a minute you throw in a dab of butter and some shrooms
let em kick around in that pan for a minute and then add back that tbone and cover the pan. Wait 10 minutes and you have heaven! serve this with thick cut steak frys and texas toast.

What I do is: I melt some marg or butter in a pan.
I put the mushroom in once the butter.marg has melted. You can either cut the muchrooms as you like or keep them whole.
Then I sprinkle a little cinnamon over them and fry them up.
