People just assume you believe as they do. I've had the same experience.
I guess because I dress nicely, I'm polite and try to help people when I can people just assume I'm Christian. I guess they'd expect an atheist to dress in black and have their arms lacerated from cutting themselves or something.

Here in the UK it's the other way round. You're assumed to be an atheist unless there's some specific reason for people to think otherwise.

People act shocked for a lot of reasons. When I used to tell people i was vegetarian, people were always like "what? you dont eat meat? WHY?" But it always is shocking when someone says they dont believe in God. Just look around you. Sometimes i dont know people can have their eyes open and not see the magificience that is Gods Creation and they actually still believe that they came from monkeys and fish. Thats shocking to me.

Maybe they expect non-believers to be jerks, and you are a nice person. Or maybe they expect us to have horns coming out of our heads and orbs of fire from our eyes.

Because there's more of them than of us, so they are surprised when you come up with something they are not used to.

Because it is shocking that someone wouldn't want to go to heaven, and choose hell instead.
