. I have 2 German Shepherds that had that same problem with my cat. I solved it be kneeing my dog ( my female especially) in the ribs and telling her LEAVE IT. It took her being knee-ed about 15 times with the LEAVE IT command every time till she got it through her thick head that it wasn't worth going after the cat. ( For those of you who believe this is cruel, it is like spurring a horse. My female is very dominant and hard headed as well)
The other thing that you might try to to say HEY HEY in quick succession. This will divert the dogs attention. Also reward the dog when he/she leaves the cat alone.
With consistency and hard work you can get the dog to leave the cat alone.
I saw this hint on a dog training show that worked. The dog on that show was aggressive toward the cats the man had. They suggested that you rub a towel all over the cats fur to pick up the cats scent. Then you put the dogs food bowls on the towel.. That way the dog gets used to the scent of the cat. Do the same thing with the dog so that the cat gets used to the dogs scent. It took a bit of time, but eventually, the dog was calmer around the cat.
I hope that these hints work for you. GOOD LUCK!!!!!

I have a great dane and 2 cats, they have been together for 5 years and my dane "goes after" my cats all the time.. They are just trying to play, danes do NOT realize how big they are. She gets down on her haunches and "growls" which is like talking for them. I doubt your dane will hurt your cat, they should work it out in a few weeks. My cat will swat at the dane when she gets fed up with her and the dane runs away, they will figure it out.

They're not necessarily being mean to each other, they way you have described it. The dog could either want to play, or it is just setting the rules for the cat. Give them some more time to adjust, but if it does not get better, ask your vet or a dog expert.

I'd be extra cautious about interpreting what your dog does or does not mean by growling. It's unsafe to assume that your dog does not intend to catch and kill your cat. Please find a way to manage the situation so that your cat does not pay for your mistakes with his life. Thanks.

Train your dog as soon as you can to not approach the cat that way. "leave it" works for me. good luck.
