Now Southern Baptist and neo-Nazi's, but it "begun as a society club designed to relieve boredom for former Confederate soldiers, it later blossomed into a vigilante group when it was led by General Nathan Forrest the very next year. Retaining the ghoulish costumes donned by its founders, Forrest ushered in a constitution. Demographic studies have shown that two of the prominent professions in the Klan were Protestant minister and police officer."

As for the cross burning, I heard that it had to do with a poem by Sir Walter Scott, who first brought the "fiery cross" to attention in "The Lady of the Lake".

They have tended to be rural Baptists. The crosses were burned to provide a religious, vaguely threatening, and highly visible symbol. The movement developed in response to Reconstruction after the American Civil War, when many Southerners saw their property, livelihoods and values destroyed or stolen by corrupt, invading Northern "carpetbaggers" and freed slaves. Their activities were designed to intimidate the people they feared into leaving or backing down, and generally allowing things to go back to the way they were in the "good old days". Anything foreign, including non-Protestant religions, was demonized and considered a legitimate target.

I was reared in North Carolina and have known many KKK members. All of them that I knew were Southern Baptists. Supposedly the burned crosses to reflect their Christian heritage. Mostly they were harmless who enjoyed the fellowship of other bigoted people just like many churches today. They loved terrorizing others but their bark was much greater than their bite.

Their own twisted thoughts and ideas was their
religion.Hiding behind a mask and desecrating
the cross with fire and scaring innocent people.
I would be willing to say not one of their kind could explain why they desecrated the cross.

They might say they were members of a Particular religion because their parents were that. It does not make them what their parents were as they acted as a CULT to suit their wicked theories.

Don't know why they burn crosses, but most KKK members are Protestant (i.e. Christian, but not Catholic [Baptist, Presbyterian, etc.]).
