I'm Catholic, and I know that Eastern Othordox are basically the same, (Except for a few things) But, I know the Priests in the Orthodox Churches can get Married....I'm thinking about becoming a Catholic Priest when I get older....But somebody told me that I can't convert to Orthodox, and become a Priest to get married? Is that true? Because I'm Catholic?

Thanks =)

Ok, here's the deal- Orthodox pirests CAN NOT GET MARRIED. A married man may become a priest, but a priest cannot get married.

(Roman Catholic is similar. A married man may be ordained a deacon, but a deacon cannot get married- like if he divorces or his wife dies)

The process for becoming a priest is long and complicated- over 10 years. How would you support a family?

Also, converting to orthodox requires permission from both your bishop and the orthodox bishop.....and you should have a better reason than "I want to be a priest and get married, too"

The Roman Catholic tradition of the celibate priesthood is challenging- but so is marriage. I am good friends with several priests, all of whom are the best men I know....and more faithful to their vows than the married men I know.

I am a married priest who has converted from Protestantism. I do not know if the Orthodox will allow a former Catholic priest to come to their Church but out of the 23 Rites of the Catholic Church only one, the Latin Rite, has the discipline of the celibate priesthood. So there is no problem becoming a priest and being married. The problem will only be in the Latin Rite.

I believe that would be up to the people who supervised your conversion process. If married priesthood were the principal reason, I doubt they would consider your conversion sincere. They're looking for more spiritual reasons.
