I was hoping someone with experience in putting their dogs in weight pulling competitions could help me out in finding out more about it and the rules and regulations of the sport? If you could let me know of a site that would be great as well. Also does your dog have to be AKC to be able to compete in competitions?

No. your dog does not have to be registered to compete in weight pulling unless it is a Club santioned event. BOTH the AKC and the UKC have weight pulling. BUT the UKC does have club events that it will let unregestered dogs compete in... includig wight pulling. Go to the link below as a good place to start.
Ignore the haters. They can't help but be foul. They are choking on their own ignorance.
Good Luck

I know that this particular page is focused on the Pit Bull... But it partains to all non-registered dogs.

There are several breeds that have their own competitions. I have Newfs and our breed clubs have draft tests all over the country.
You can search weight pulling + your breed and you might come up with something.

The AKC is looking at "Draft" as a possible title in the near future. It would have classes for what my breed does as well as driving and weight pulling.

Your dog does not have to be AKC to compete. Here's a link to one of the larger weight pulling organizations in the US, it can give you more information:
