do i have to take a class?
or can i just get a punching bag and go to the gym lol

A punching bag is better then nothing, but teaches you nothing in terms of technique. I've studied Kung Fu for a couple of years and have learned there is a counter for every thing, and there is no way to learn them out of a book and know how to apply them or be able to just muscle your way into winning every fight.
Take classes if your really serious about being able to defend yourself.

Best way to learn is application. Either start picking fights, enter tournaments or take a class

Take a class, but if some dude comes out of nowhere trying to abduct you or something just plant a solid kick to the male genital area. I think i can speak for most guys by saying it will leave us out of commision for a while.

My current Sifu has as good an answer for that question as I have heard. Go down to a local all black bar and yell hey N*****. If you do this a few times.... and live....
Or you can go into a redneck bar.. probably safer.. and say that Nascar's number three was a queer. Again after a few times... if you live you will be able to fight. Now for self defense... go to the sporting goods store and buy a shotgun... saw the barrel down to 181/2 inches and strap it to your back.

You can learn something on your one, but if you really want to be good you need to take lessons from an professional
