How outdated was it? Months? Years?
Aside from the fact that Science Diet isn't a great food, I doubt it will harm the dog if it's only a few weeks/months expired. Might be kinda stale, though.
Frankly, when I worked at a vet clinic, I brought home expired Science Diet cat food for the strays around the house all of the time. Didn't cause a problem.

It wouldn't be right for your vet to give out fresh bags of science. I breed dogs and I've done alot of research on different dog foods and their ingredients and science diet is one of the worst foods you can feed your dog. The only reason vets promote it is 1)their given comissions for selling it and 2) these days vets aren't educated in the subjects of good and bad foods so they pretty much don't know any better. I don't want to bad mouth vets some just don't know what they're doing to dogs when they tell owners to feed it to their dogs. All I can say is DO THE RESEARCH. I would highly recomend Canidae. It's a great natural diet and fairly inexpensive, though you have to look on their website and find where you can get it. The only thing more natural is to go raw:) Never feed your dog Science Diet, Iams, Ol'Roy, Kibbles and Bits, or Pedigree.

As long as it's not more than a month or so out of date, I would be okay with it. Simply because it's chock full of preservatives and new bags I put on the shelf at my store are good till 2009. The grossly underestimate the shelf life just to be safe. If the bag has never been opened, it shouldn't be a problem.
On the other hand, feeding Science Diet is like paying 5 star restraunt prices for Mc Donalds food and service. The ingredients are low quality corn, sorghum (corn alternative) and by-products. The ingredients are no better than what you see in Purina One.

no that is not right, that would be like giving outdated meds or something, but at least he is giving it away and not selling it. I guess it all depends on how outdated it is. Science diet is quality name food and personally, i would take it. If it is under 6 mths it will still be good, they just put a date on the thing for FDA purposes and to save their ***, but i guarantee if the seal isn't broken it will still be fresh, i think that outdated premium food will be better than brand new store nougt, regular dog food.

They frequently give out-dated food to the shelter. It is fine. Now, if it was years out of date, that would be another story.
The vet just can't sell it when the date has gone by.
FYI, many vets DO give outdated meds to the shelters. We get Amoxi drops and Clavamox frequently. They cannot sell that wither if it is outdated, but they can donate it. You can even call the drug companies and they will tell you that the drugs are still good after the date.

Don't feed it to your dog. No matter what vets say, you should always remember that when it comes to food, make sure it is fresh for your pet.

It wouldn't hurt the dog. They should be able to return it to the company for an exchange though unless the company said to dispose of it.

If you have any concerns or affection for your animal don't give it any of the food, better safe than sorry! Have a great day.

I suggest calling 3 other vets, and ask them their opinion. I wouldn't do it unless all 3 say it's perfectly fine.
It sounds really fishy.
Edit --
Wow, 4 thumbs down. I wasn't giving a FACT, it's an opinion.
