You won't like this answer, but you did ask what I think. I live in a southwest border state and I question whether anyone has analyzed the cost-benefit analysis of the border fence. If you research this issue, you'll find that 40% of the illegals enter by bus or plane. The vast majority of the remaining illegals enter on tourist and visitor visas and do not return. When you go to Juarez or Tijuana or Mexicali, you see long lines of Mexicans entering legally to work as housekeepers etc. The problem is that many do not return. Have you seen the mountains of southern New Mexico or the desert of southern Arizona? The idea that a border fence will solve this very serious problem MAY be misguided. We've had the southern border of my state patrolled by the National Guard. Do you know how many illegals were caught last year sneaking across the border in my state? A total of 42. There are more than 20 million illegal Mexican immigrants in the U.S.--and that has to be only a wild guess by the census bureau and should be on the low side. How many of those do you think snuck across the border? The border fence interrupts the natural migration of wildlife and has separated at least one Indian tribe in Arizona. The border fence is not a panacea for this problem and I don't think anyone has ever checked on the cost of the border fence and the number of illegals who enter legally and stay illegally. I think this is an incredibly serious problem, but no one has shown me the border fence is the best solution. If we build a 7' fence, why can't Juan build a 8' ladder? EDIT: The other thing I forgot to mention was that I drove to Mexico in March in an SUV with clothes covering the windows. When I crossed at Yuma, the American border guard waved me through without getting out of his chair or asking us a single question. When I entered Mexico, the border crossing was completely unmanned. To clarify in response to "slew", the American border guard who waved us threw told my wife, who was driving, to back up so "I don 't have to get out of my chair." (literally). She did, he looked at her and waved us through without a word. While I suppose she does not look like a terrorist, he could not see into our car.

I think that is a step in the right direction, for finally putting fiscal control on Republican (Borrow and Spend) fiscal irresponsibility for a country that borrows $1.44 billion a day from China And has a $9,087,415,617,071.78 National debt that is growing at $1.44 billion a day since Sept, 29,2006.
Why don't those that support the waste of money on the fence contribute the funds to the Minuteman Fence building project.
Oh I see! They are under investigation for misuse of funds.
Lets check.

Article from,The Arizona Republic,
Tucson- the honeymoon is over for the Minuteman.
More than 16 months after the civilian border patrol movement took root in Arizona, the cofounders of the original Minuteman Project are feuding publicly, and some formal loyalists are calling for detailed accounting of the estimated $1.6 million to $1.8 million in donations the group has received..
According to CNN News report on 11-6-07 A film crew did not find any type of fence, that was built with the donated funds. They even filmed an aireal view, no fence in sight, What Happened to the money ?

Even though they are not doing it for the correct reason, I'm not upset to see the fence project delayed.
It is an inevitability of that fence that it will be abandoned. It only slows down the illegals by about 2 to 3 minutes. A good physical deterrent will need to slow them down more like that many hours.
The reason is, there is no road going along the Mexican border the way it does along the Canadian/US border. Border agents are either there to catch the illegals crossing or they will have to catch them several miles up country, and the fence won't change that at all.
Laws with teeth, like in Oklahoma will be the best deterrent because a physical one would have to resemble the Great Wall of China to be as effective, and enforcement of Oklahoma like laws will cost a lot less.

I think that decision will come back to bite them in the polls.
They don't seem to be cognizant of their legislative base, border security is high on the list of issues that need to be solved for the public, ALL of the public. The funding also cut the move to add 5000 more border agents and a few other things. I have to say, I can't figure the thinking on this one.

In response to David M. Perhaps increase border guards would solve the problem of people just being waved in!!!
Remember, this is not just to protect us from illegal immigrants. It's part of the defence bill. It's also for the war on Terror and our war on Drugs. I hope the budget would pay for equipment to take air samples. I know that some of the equipment is being set up, but I haven't heard it being in place of the borders.

Yes, under the guise that funding is in another bill, a bill that Bush says is loaded with pork and will veto. The illegals and their supporters sure do have a inside track

It's rapidly getting to a point where nothing the Democrats do surprises me anymore.
Just another case of Politicians turning a deaf ear to what their constituents want.
