Isn't that the amazing thing about the story, there were no witnesses. Actually most stories in the Bible there are no witnesses to much of what happens. Either Joseph and Mary were having sex before marriage or Mary was having sex with someone else, if in fact Jesus existed (since there is no evidence anywhere except the Bible - and if it only takes one book to make it fact, then Harry Potter is real as well). Getting pregnant prior to marriage was a stoneable offense back then, so what a better way to save her butt, because people were afraid of God and what if she was telling the truth. People are gullible unfortunately, but really good question.

Part of salvation rests on this. If you don't believe this, then it is being said that God's word is in error, which would make salvation false. If part of a book or statement is wrong, then how could any of it be trusted. Since the Bible is reliable in history and science, I choose to believe it ALL.
If no one else but them, and the angels, God saw it. God inspired the Bible, so He was a witness. There wasn't anything to save, as if it had been a lie, then Joseph would have "put her away". I doubt if everyone believed them at the time, as that sin had the penalty of death, depending on circumstances.

The messages from angels to Joseph and Mary were of private matters:
* Mary's pregnacy
* escape to Egypt before Herod's soldier arrive to kill the baby

not to be given in public.

Matthew and Luke interviewed Mary later when they wrote their gospels.

Nope there were no witnesses. But, when an angel comes down from Heaven and tells you something directly from God are you going to sit there and question it or as a true follower of God are you going to accept it and move on?

I think someone caught the whole thing on camera but then Satan got hold of the film and accidentally-on-purpose lost it.

I'm sure not everyone believed them. Case in point, your snide question.

You do realize that the whole virgin thing was a mistake during translation? She was not a virgin, they were actually saying she had the child when she was very young.
