she has her own business and STILL hasn't turned in her 2006 taxes! I'm worried that it could effect my good credit or our chances of owning a house in California (which is really hard).

Did you file your own separate return? If so, you're in the clear and her return is her problem. Maybe you should re-think your priorities though... If you catch my drift...

Late filing of the return should not affect your credit. However, (1) the government may eventually send a bill for the tax it believes is due, and, if you do not pay, that will affect your credit (2) if you do owe, whether you file late or you do not file, there will be a big penalty for not filing on time, and, if you do not pay, that will affect your credit

IRS will eventually send her a letter and tell her they will file the return for her, no deduction, no dependents will be give to her and charge her late filing penalties, failure to file penalties etc.

Do it for her - complete the return for her, signature ready. Offer to hire an accountant for her.
