Well, there is this theory ( though I can't recall the name of the man who came up with it) that it is better to believe just in case, than to not believe and be wrong. The answer is simple, If there is a God, he will know that you are only believing in him because he might be there and you might go to hell if you don't. The point in believing in God is to do so because you really believe he is God, and that he loves you. He knows everything, so if you are faking then he knows that as well. You can't fool God. (That is if you Believe in him)

What do you have to loose by not believing in Odin? After all if I'm right I get to go the halls of the Gods and you get to go to Hel. If I'm wrong, well then I've lost nothing. So you see, you should believe in Odin, what do you have to loose?!?

Sounds just as dumb when you say it. My soul isn't for sale to the highest bidder with the prettiest looking prize. I'll take my gods over yours any day.
Hail Odin! Hail the Gods!

Belief is not a *choice*. If I don't believe, saying that I do won't make me a true believer...it will make me a fraud.

If god existed, wouldn't he know the difference between someone who believed, and someone who *said* they believed because they didn't "have anything to lose?"

Well where I come from I'd lose face. But that doesn't matter. The point is that I can't *choose* to believe in something for which I have seen no evidence.

That's like saying "what do you have to lose by killing someone if no one would ever find out?"

I find it amusing that you would tell someone to "pretend" to believe in something just for the sake of, what? So you can feel better?

We already have enough people claiming to be Christians; they're called Republicans.

Self respect, logic, my Sundays off.

What would I have to gain?

Even if I believed in God, there's no way I would ever worship such a manipulative, judgemental, unthinking being.

Reason as a means of determining the value of things
My self-respect.
Logic.
Sunday mornings.
The freedom to never have to wear nice clothes.
The knowledge that all my friends like me for me instead of for being on the same "team".
The ability to giggle at apocalyptic prophecies.
Discernment.

A lot of effort for a whole lot of nothing. Holding up that belief just gets too heavy after a while, & what has one got to show for it? Really.

*drink*

I'd be lying to myself. Do you really think any of us can MAKE ourselves believe something, just in case? It's not something I can just talk myself into...especially not without a little more to go on than Pascal's Wager.

My sanity, or rather, I would have to lose it BEFORE I was able to believe.
Honestly, what if I asked you:
What do you have to lose by believing in my imaginary friend, Bob?
Insert your answer and make it ditto for me...
