I am a parent to 2 and 1 on the way... I think that these jobs are necessary for many families to make enough money to su[pport their family or live comfortably. I work 7:00-3:30. and my fiance works 8:00-6:00. Our children are in daycare/preschool, but not for long because we can no longer afford to have them in daycare, so we will now work opposite shifts. You do what you have to do.

I think this really depends on the parents. Obviously, a single parent rarely has the choice of whether to work or not and the best thing they can do is make sure the kids are in a good school or daycare program. In the case of two parents, it is often possible for one parent to stay home, if they are willing to sacrifice certain material items. I used to think this was the best choice, no question. However, since then I have had the opportunity to see many women who stay home with their kids (as I do), and I think it's not always a good thing. If a woman is going to stay home but leave her kids unattended in front of the TV all day so that she can "do her own thing" than a good day care program would probably be better for the kids. If you're going to stay home with your kids, make sure your ready to spend time interacting with them and teaching them, not just being in the same house as them. If that doesn't interest you, leave them with someone who will.

Sometimes you've got to do what you've got to do. However, I've had co-workers who didn't really need the money who were simply putting their careers ahead of their children, with the kids practically screaming for attention.
And as far as being safe at home, I heard a radio program where a man wearing a hidden microphone went up to a 15 year old boy's house and asked to go in the back yard "to look his cat," while Mom was listening in, confident that Junior wouldn't let him in. Guess what? "Sure! C'mon in, the back door's that way!"
Priorities, people.

i know many parents that work 9 to 5 they are still great parents. they are the ones who have learned to balance their time efficiently. I work 9 to 5 and I have 2 children it is difficult and sometimes I feel like I did not get to spend anytime with my kids during the day. Most people do need to work 9 to 5 to support their children, it is a part of life and I don't think working parents have negative effects on children. It is a matter of how much time and what kind of time you spend with your children.

I believe that working teaches our children good work ethics. They learn that this is a world in which we not only have to work, but also gain self-respect through doing a good job.
It gives them a way to equate to their parents, in that the parents have work time, and the kids have school & homework time. It adds to the structure that's built into every day, which most kids welcome.
It also means the kids can often get what they want for Christmas, which I think the kids appreciate! :)

i am a mother of 3, and i work fulltime. the bills have to get paid some how, and a partime job isn't enough. basically its a double edge sword. its either go out and get a job, and support your own kids. or rely on the governmemt to provide assistance.

I say to each his own. I don't see why people on Yahoo Answers have to debate this over and over and over. We need to let it go already. What is right for me may not be right for someone else. Really who cares?

I do it. I go to work every day and my mother stays with my daughter. I would stay home if I could afford it, but I don't feel guilty for working either.
