I've always had the lifelong dream of saving lives... I cant explain it, but I do. I would love to join the military specifically the Marines or Army and serve several years in combat. However, I'd like to go to college before hand and get a degree in business. My concern is that I'll get distracted with my schoolwork and completely pulled away from my Military desire...

Should I even bother joining the military?

If you want ot go to college before entering the military, consider ROTC. Unless you accept a scholarship, the first two years of ROTC do not incur a military obligation. Think of it as a free look. If you like it, continue on and you will be comissioned as a 2nd Lt when you graduate. That is pretty much a no lose option for you.

If you decide you want to go in ROTC also offers 2 and 3 year scholarships. If this intrigues you, I suggest you go to the army web site and check out the ROTC section. Then identify some schools with ROTC programs (most state universities) contact the depatment of Military Science, go visit them and also talk to some of the cadets and some of the staff. If you like it it is a good set up for going into the military.

Your military service will greatly further your career ambitions later in life... and if you get a 4-year degree before going in, you'll likely be able to use that degree to get a commission and become an officer. If you really want to join the military, then plan for it. You can include school if you like; just bear in mind that the military does have programs to help pay off student loans, plus has the Montgomery GI Bill to pay for future classwork. Not to mention you can take classes free of tuition while IN the military, if you can find the time. But there's no reason you can't have it both ways--it's not an "either/or" situation.

Yes...

A Military Career is best off earlier in life. You said that you had a life-long dream - well do it! You stated speciffically the Marines or the Army well whoowaa ! Just keep in mind that you can find valuable information online and from recruiters about ALL Branches including the CoastGuard and Reserves. You can get your schooling all but paid for from the Military if you take the Montgumery GI Bill option once you enlist! You may also take CLEP and DANTES courses which are free and allow you to pre-test out of a College Course. So say that you are real good with Spanish from HS and you want to take a Spanish Course in the Military you could sign up for the CLEP test take and if you get a passing score You Get Credit for the WHOLE COURSE!!! Or you could go to a community college and pay $300 per credit and take a 3 credit class for $900 + books etc.

Military offers so many advantages to starting off...
Best of all - It gives you pride in God and Country!

If u have a family, the military might not be your best choice for your. If you don't, then go for it. If you wanna kick some *** go into the U.S. Navy and volunteer for the Seal team and then if you pass the most hardest training known to man, then you'll be sent out to kick ***. And you'll get the upmost respect from all the branches. If you wanna run around and save lives then the airforce or the coast guard is for you. The Navy, Army, and Marines are more combat oriented (what I love) so it all depends what you want. Good luck on your choice.

If saving lives is your dream, why go into a combat situation where you'd be more likely to be taking lives? Become a police officer or a state trooper. Or, better yet, join the U.S. Coast Guard. You'd be more likely to save lives in those jobs.

Then again, if you want a business career, do that and become a volunteer fireman or an EMT. Then you could do both - Save lives and be a businessman.

What you can do is the four year active duty . When oyu get out ,the military will pay for your tuition and if you still want to stay in the military, chances are you'll become an officer. That way you have a degree and a military pension under your belt.

You sound confused. To be in the military is to devote your life for X number of years to the role of defender of this country's values and her citizens. To save lives in the military is to be a corpsman/medic, a medical field. You could save lives and protect the country and still continue a business education by joining the Coast Guard. But it sounds like you've made up your mind to go to college, so go.
