Let me say this, the morals you would set up would be for yourself and not everyone else. How could you make a huge decision upon everyone's life to say what would be right and wrong. Essentially if you or anyone else would set up a moral counsel then essentially that counsel would be elevated to "god" status. Just like the devil - the devil will tell you go ahead do what you want because it is good for you - what is not told is how awful it really is afterwards maybe 5 minutes maybe 5 years - but, still it is not good.

Here is a huge question - Is it good to have sex with a prostitute? Well? I guess in certain circumstances it would probably be okay - unfortunately the devil plays that exact game and puts a spin on it to let you know sex is good. Now with who that is the major part of the question. Ask yourself is it good to steal - kill - curse at others?

So to answer your question can there be morals without God? Sure, but your morals would not be the same as others and therefore everyone would be telling others how to live.

Ask yourself this: If you were convinced that there was no God, would you go around hurting people and doing horrible things?

If not, then there's your answer. There can be morals without God.

Morality doesn't come from some god, it is learned from your parents.

You are either a moral person or not....god has nothing to do with it.

Yes, of course.

In fact, the existence of a deity is irrelevant to morals and ethics.

There is no logical reason to connect the creator of the universe with an entity who is concerned with our correct behavior.

The existence of a punishing God is not any kind of real basis for a system of morality---it is the kind of pre-moral behavior modification used on small children. To say that morals are simply "God's Law" is to argue that morals are arbitrary---that if God decided, for example, that adultery was actually OK, it would in fact be OK. Could God command us to do evil? Could God make evil that which is now good, and good that which is now evil? If you argue that "God wouldn't decide that", you are arguing from a moral standpoint outside of religion.

The moral code of essentially everyone is independent of "God's Word" in the Bible. The Bible allows slavery and the subjugation of women. The Bible allows genocide. The Bible prescribes death for almost all transgressions, including apostasy and witchcraft. The fact that no one seriously supports these things anymore is a demonstration that essentially everyone's moral sense comes from some source outside the Bible, and in fact outside religion.

Philosophy teaches us that morals and ethics derive from our values. Values come from our understanding of life and the world we live in, not necessarily from religion.

Not really, with the lack of a ultimate moral standard, all morals are nothing but a matter of opinion.

however, I think that people are social creatures and want to be part of society, therefore we behave according to a moral standard set on social cohesion.

I have never been in trouble with the law. I never hit anyone who didn't try to hit me first. I have never struck a woman. I have never forced myself upon anyone. I treat all people equally. While I don't particularly care for children, I have always treated them well. I don't drink, or use recreational drugs. I pay my taxes (as much as I dislike them). I have never tried to force my beliefs on others.

I am a nurse, caring for people society and religion have turned their backs on.

I am also an atheist.

You tell me if I have any morals.

Morals are just a community code of acceptable behavior. All animals that live in groups have rules. Ours have been overly scrutinized because we have a more sophisticated method of communication.
