Mine was given to me. I don't use it all the time -- it DOES take up a lot of space. Thing is, when I DO use it, I LOVE it. I think they're worth it regardless. A cookbook does come with it and once you start using the cookbook for general bread, you think up new things yourself to add to make different breads. It's pretty awesome. You have to use yeast -- make sure you NEVER use too much -- that is a disaster when that happens (experience, ha ha)

I have a bread machine, and now that my kids are gone from the home, I don't use it much. I have been thinking about using it more lately, though. That being said, when the kids were home and I was working every day, we used that machine each and every day! Sometimes it was simply tomato soup and hot bread., sometimes hot cocoa, scrambled eggs and bread or toast, and we used it for most lunches. It has paid for itself over and over again. Nothing like fresh bread that's ready when you get home from work or school.
I think it depends on where you are in your life right now. Do you entertain alot? Do you have kids? Do you love to bake? What kind of meals do you have? Does it include bread, rolls, sweet buns etc.,
Only you can determine if having one would have value.
There is a cookbook that comes with most of them, it isn't hard to use., and just check consumer reports for the best tested ones..they also include prices.
Happy baking!

I have a Breadman Pro. I love it, I use it about once a week. But mostly for the dough setting. It comes with recipes in the manual, and you can find tons of books or recipes online. I don't use it for baking the bread since I don't like the texture and having to fish the paddle out of the middle of the bread. Our favorite thing to do with it is make an Italian dough, roll it out, spread it with goodies and roll it up and bake it in the conventional oven. I love making dough in it because you just dump everything in, and you can walk away for a few hours.

I got one for x-mas a few years back, used it once. Not that there is anything wrong with them, you just have to ask yourself, Will i really use this gadget? Do i eat that much bread? If you are serious enough about bread, why don't you get a pizza stone and make some from scratch?

I've never had one myself, but, I had a friend of mine who had one at one time. His ex-wife would make the bread. I believe that she made hers from scratch. I know that there are books on bread making you can purchase through the stores.
Heck, you might even check out Amazon and see what they have.
I also you believe you would have to be a serious bread eater to have one though. If you're not care full, depending on how you make it, it will go stale sooner than store-bought bread.

I have one. I used it a few times, but found making bread without the machine to come out a whole lot better.

i love mine!!! mine came with recipes in the instruction manual the only differece in ingrediants was using bread machine yeast, i don't know the average price we got ours at a garage sale your best bet is prob. on a thanksgiving day sale, they are really simple, it will even knead the dough and then you can take it out and let it rise if you choose.
The 1 hr recipe is okay it works in a pinch but it is much better to do the 3hr one.
the really nice thing is you just put in your ingrediants, wet then dry then yeast and just close the lid and push a button and your done! so you don't use a lot of dishes (just measuring cups and spoons) and they are easy to clean too!!!

You can buy mixes or make bread from scratch. I'm sure they all come with some recipes and you could find more on the internet. I'd search "bread machine" at Amazon.com and read user reviews to see which models people seem to like the best.

I had one and didn't like it..... no you don't have to have a mix but they do sell them if you what. you can find a bunch of cook books with recipes for bread maker....the one that jumps out at me is taste of home quick cocking... it is a magazine. I bought mine for 35 dollars. I have know people who have love there but If you make bread allot ...home made you may find( like I did) that it has a different taste and texture.

They make mixes but you don't have to use them. I like homemade better. There are cookbooks and here is a website: http://allrecipes.com/Recipes/Bread/Bread-Machine/Main.aspx
They are super easy to use. I have a Sunbeam brand - I think it was about $100 - not sure - got it for Christmas. I use mine a lot. It has a dough setting so I use it to make my pizza dough. Happy baking.
