last time I took my dog to the vet the bill was $280.00......I can't afford to pay that much but I want my dog to get the medical attention he needs yearly and his heart worm meds.

Check your local pet supply stores (Petco, PetSmart, these are ones in my area, I don't know if they are in your area). A lot of these places have clinics once or twice a month where your pets can get all their yearly shots and meds and such. Saves you a lot of money on office visits. Of course, if your pet is sick you will still need to take them to the vet but just for basic shots and meds, try a clinic. Hope this helps. Good luck!

First, start stashing 10 bucks a week into an envelope and keep that envelope in a file. This will become your dog emergency fund. It can help you offset unplanned expenses.

Next, start combing through the yellow pages, many cliincs have ads. Call around, ask for prices on basic things such as office visit fees, vaccination costs, heartguard meds.

The other thing is to contact an animal shelter and ask if they use or recommend an affordable vet.

Lastly, ask everyone you know that has dogs, most are happy to share if they love their clinic.

Good luck!

Humane societies only offer limited services - typically vaccinations, spay/neuter and sometimes microchipping. They do not do annual exams or provide medical treatment. They attempt to not compete with private vets.

Call around and price various vets in your area. Keep in mind though that quality vet care is expensive - vets have 8 years of college to pay for, a facility, a staff, expensive equipment and medications. So you won't find many "low cost" full-service veterinarians.

Call your local Humane Society and Animal Services and ask them who they use.
If there is a Petluv near you, that is a low cost vet clinic.
