A credit card for my purposes. My wife and I take plane trips, and I have a card that gives frequent flier miles on any domestic airline in the continental US.
We pay off the cards every month. We know what we can afford and what we can't. If either one of us thinks wait a minute, this is something we don't need, then we don't buy it.
Debit cards don't give you discounts or give you rebates. And after you get that free ticket, it makes you feel reaaaaaall goooooooooooood.

Use a credit card because the money is not pulled out from your bank account as it is with your debit card. The credit card will help you build your credit (as long as you pay it off on time) and you can always review any charges and contest them before paying it. You can't do this with your debit card because the money is deducted at the end on the banking business day.

Credit Card because if especially if you are buying over the weekend when most people do.. banks are closed on the weekends so all your purchases (if using debit card) will go pending and when monday hits and you weren't watching what you were spending.. bam! with overdraft fees for each fricking item, unless you have a small credit line with the bank account for overdraft protection. So yeah just use your credit card so you don't end up screwing up

I'd like to know from your other answerers why a credit card is best, specifically for on-line purchases. I've not heard the reasoning before.
Personally, I wouldn't have a credit card. Obviously, I'm a Dave Ramsey listener.

for online purchases use credit card and pay it off on time. It wont cost you anything but you will have the ability to dispute charges for merchandise problems.

i say debit card because your bank is much easier to deal with refunds than your credit card company in case of stolen funds/number.
