Sometimes during the treatment spaces will open up where you don't want them and that's when your orthodontist will put a special wire or a plastic chain on the teeth where the gap needs to be closed. It hurts because there is now this added pressure to pull teeth slightly to close that unwanted gap. The pain will go away in a couple of days, just like it does with regular tightening.

I wore braces for two years. When the wire got thicker my teeth would hurt more, this means that it is working. The thicker the wire, the tighter it will make your teeth feel. This feeling will go away as your teeth will grow accustomed to this new wire. Until your next appointment where perhaps an even thicker wire may be applied.
